I had the good fortune last summer to be invited by Chirps Smith (MidwesternFiddler) to a fantastic jam at his home. This is a snippet of a great tune that I just caught the end of that was being fiddled by Chirps, Joe Samojedny and Paul Tyler. The mandolin playing is by Dave Stabbe, an excellent old-time musician from Madison, WI. At a jam last week, I played it for Dave and asked him. He said didn't know, or even remember playing it! Does anyone recognize this tune, and if so, where can I find a recording? Chirps, are you out there?

My first time in trying to post a link here, so this may not work.

Sounds like Sugar in the Gourd to me.

Old-Time, All the Time

Music is found in the space between the notes -- in the silence between the chords. Get your spaces right, and you''ve got it. ~ Albert Greenfield

Just got a response from Chirps to the above that's on my Music Archive page.

The tune is called "Banks of the Ohio," that was discovered by ethnomusicologist, Dr. Paul Tyler, one of the fiddlers on the sound bite I posted. Paul obtained the tune from a manuscript by a fiddler/fifer named John Carroll, who was stationed at Ft. Niagra, New York, in the early 1800's.

The tune is also on Vol. 2 of Chirp's Home Recordings, which have been highly recommended by others here in FHO.

Obviously a different tune than the traditional bluegrass tune by the same name.

Heck, if Chirps hadn't clued you in, I could've, because I play that tune.

Just call me Dwight.

Bruce, I was going to PM you next if I hadn't heard from Chirps. I suspected you probably played it, having rubbed elbows with these guys for so long.

Now that is a nice tune and great playing. It has a lot of notes in it.
