I was browsing around for some other stuff on Aliexpress this weekend and saw that they have geared violin pegs for $40.

I'm assuming these are Chinese made knock-offs of dubious quality.

On the other hand, every fiddle I own is a eastern European knock-off of dubious quality--I'm loathe to spend $100 for a set of quality geared tuners for a fiddle I paid less than half that for. $40, though, is about what I'm willing to spend to be able to use the tuners without cursing.

Anybody tried these tuners to see just how bad they are/if they're $40 worth of upgrade for cheaper fiddles?

I haven't, however, I have learned that you get what you paid for. I always tend to first buy cheap, then regret the purchase - then buy what I should have bought to begin with. Only spending more in the long run. That's just me though.

Who knows? One thing I would worry about is having option to buy them with the correct diameter should the old pegs holes have been enlarged above standard size. Wittner and Perfection pegs, those most commonly used, come in various diameters to compensate for this. BTW, I have been using Witter pegs for many years now and have no complaints.

I hear what you're saying about getting what you pay for. The other option, though, it's a $3 set of regular wooden pegs, so that's even worse! ?? ??

The "are the holes the right size thing, though, is a legit concern - shoot, based on how bad some of these are wallowed out, each holes is probably a different size!!

If the pegholes really are different sizes, then no geared pegs will work. A luthier can ream the holes so they (probably) can be used with mechanical or wooden pegs. I'd suggst you look for something a little better than $3 a set though. Quality pegs, properly fitted and maintained, can work surprisingly well.
