The Violin Beautiful - Posted - 05/23/2024: 12:38:17
This violin is a beautiful instrument made by Virginia’s finest maker, Daniel O. Smith. It has an exquisite birdseye maple back with matching ribs and neck.
It had a very deep personal meaning for Smith, as several family members passed away while he was making it. It was also a violin that provided me a learning opportunity in carving birdseye—I was fortunate to get to work on some of the external arching as well at Smith’s direction. After it was completed, the violin was put into one Smith’s display cases and kept there, as the maker considered it his best work and didn’t want to play or sell it.
After I sold another of his violins recently, he decided to make this one available. It has rich and powerful tone that projects with ease—it’s the most powerful Smith violin I’ve played.
