I haven't as much practice in lately, but I've spent the last two years focusing on the fiddle music of Northeastern Kentucky, and the fiddle was being good to me today so I thought I'd record a bunch of my favorite tunes from this area. I have learned these from people and recordings and wanted to record them before my playing gets too rusty to play these tunes anymore.

These tunes come from guys like Buddy Thomas, Roger Cooper, Charlie Kinney, Jimmy Wheeler, and Alva Greene. You really don't get to hear this music in OT circles, but I really like it and do my best to play it in the style similar to what they had down there. I think Roger Cooper is the last guy playing in this style today and I learned a lot from him this past summer at Cowan Creek and from his records.

I enjoy your tunes. And I'm a big fan of Charlie Kinney's fiddling and Noah's dolls. I wish I had one of them.

Glenn, great playing. These are all very fine tunes. Eastern KY certainly has/had a bunch of great fiddlers and tunes. Thanks for sharing some.

BJ, your avatar reminds me of Buddy Thomas' Kitty Puss album cover...lol. Glad you are interested in this music. As I mentioned earlier, almost no one plays this stuff today but it is really unique style for sure, and I think it may be picking up new interest. Anyhow, learning these tunes have really helped my playing a lot.

You can get a lot of stuff from this area from the Digital Library of Appalachia. I learned a good deal of my tunes there. I'd also recommend the Field Recorders Collective, and the Rounder Series : Traditional Fiddle Music of Kentucky. Between these sources, that's where I've learned just about all of my tunes. The rest I've learned from people I've met. I've also discovered the 7 cd set Kentucky Mountain Music, but haven't had a chance to learn some new tunes from there yet.
