I was thinking videos are kinda getting old. After all it's supposed to be about the music. I'm gonna make stuff. That's just gonna happen. But I remember having album covers to look at while the album went around and around. Dating myself.
I was talking to a friend about this. How, I'm sure nobody wants to see my fat arse sitting there. Just maybe a nice picture. He said he really liked when I used drone footage and put the music behind it. I know, that I don't know.
So when you're watching music as is done today, what do you prefer?

Airy scenes with drones would certainly attract the Gen-Z kiddos.

However, as far as the music I think you want to convey, I would suggest simply recording video shorts that go along with the music you're showcasing.

Say, for example, John Prine's "Paradise," show scenes of Kentucky, or for another example:  Diamond Rio's "Bubba Hyde,"--show videos of dudes honky-tonkin' in leisure suits, burning rubber in SuperSport Chevelles (of which I would love to own a '69).  I don't know if all that is feasible, but these days the visual is what attracts and tells stories.  However, I'm not a believer in putting politics in the music/video.

I remember reading the LP sleeves, too.  We are like the people from the early 1900s that witnessed progress from horses to jets.  Except now it's like you need a gizmo to stare at.

My preference is to see the person/people in the moment as they are creating the music. I feel the viewer feels more connected when they have that perspective. If the musician/musicians choose to film in a picturesque setting then that certainly adds to it, but it doesn't have to be pretty for me.

Depends on what you want to do.



If it's a video of a produced track and an artistic video, but a person still wants to show off the instruments and playing, I like a lot of what is coming out of the UK. This video seems pretty fancy as the track is produced so well, but a closer look is a lot of drone footage and actual musicians playing their instruments --- youtu.be/HntoxQyuFDU



If it's a teaching video ala teaching tunes in phrases or "tune of the day" type things, I like those who don't talk too much or fill it with corny jokes, giggling, or chit chat.



The "spontaneous " videos of the fiddler on the street kind making a scene kind of make me cringe. Some of them are highly produced with multiple camera angles and studio quality production... I'd rather see a rough cut phone video if a person is truly busking.



I'm not a huge fan of the racial stereotypes por hillbilly in overalls type thing. That band Uncle Earl had a little scandal over their "Streak of Lean" video and ended up taking it down and making a statement... uncleearl.net/apology

I think my favorites are of people sitting in a nice location (by a stream, in garden, etc) and playing their instrument and looking relaxed/happy...

why music friends like this type: what kind of banjo is he playing? Is she upbow or downbow there? So it can be Educational, too!

If it's a live recording, I like to see the music being made. If it's a studio recording, I don't need anything to look at and often just let the vid play without looking at it.

Side bar: To me "content" is a use of the word that implies pandering to "followers" which in turn is a word that implies all sorts of things to me, but mostly it implies cultish behavior. I know what you're getting at though, hence my reply to the topic. End of side bar.

If you’re trying to appeal to a younger audience, the video needs to have pretty high production values for it to be appealing. Most younger people nowadays don’t consume music the same way as older generations—music is listened to in the background. iTunes and Spotify are popular platforms for music. YouTube markets its paid version by offering users the ability to listen to music while using other apps.

I think you have to figure out who your audience is and make content that will appeal to them.

I totally get it. Content is one of those "meeting words." Used by them that overuse words like "pushback" and "scenario." Phrases like, "efforting towards" and "over-promised."  I'm retired now, but I remember those chimps.  "Overpromised? Don't you mean you lied to the customer?" I was unpopular in meetings because as an engineer and designer I had to deal with truth and reality. *end rant*

Thanks everyone! And if you have anything else, don't worry. Chime in again! Sometimes I fool myself. Just because I'm fairly old, and silver-headed, I think ideas should be fully formed, and matured. Certain things like character and temperament are moreso.
These videos are for myself. I have no expectations. (I don't monetize) But I do have expectations for myself, as far as wanting to make something I can sit and watch. But it's like listening to yourself sing. Cringe ain't the word for it. Is this one of those things where, chances are, I may never be satisfied with anything I create?
