I recently acquired and old Amati copy violin, most likely from Germany. It has decent sound although the higher range seems to be a little muffled. After playing it a while, I noticed the f-holes are a bit shorter than those of my good violin.
The f-holes on this one are about 65 mm, whereas those on my good fiddle are about 6-7 mm longer. I understand the lengths vary and lengthening these is probably out of the question.
I'm curious whether increasing the width of the holes may help? They are about 6 mm max now.
Either way, I can't complain too much since my cost was very small. Thanks, in advance.

Recutting f-holes is something to be avoided at all costs! They’re a part of the identity of the violin, and changing them degrades the instrument.
If you’re having problems with the sound, it’s not coming from the length or width of the f-holes.

Roger that. If not that, then I suppose adjusting the sound post may help. I'm using Vision strings now and will probably use Prim's when they wear out. That may help some as well.
