I recently purchased a Glaesel 3/4 violin at a flea market to hang on my wall. It’s a VI30E3. It’s missing the nut. I don’t know what the nut dimensions are. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can find a nut online that fits? Or know the correct nut dimensions so that I could make one? Although the violin is going to hang on my wall, I would like it to be playable. So I don't want to just hack a "cosmetic" nut out of a piece of wood.
Thanks.

Ok, I'll jump, since it's quiet over here. It seems like if your "wall hanging" is going to be playable, someone should play it. It's a little hard to tell what your plan is from your comments, but if it inspires you to learn to play, then go for it. But replacing a nut really isn't the kind of thing a typical player would attempt - take it to a luthier. My opinion (if you want it) is that a fiddle needs to be loved for it's voice, not just it's pretty face.

Hi Donna,
Thanks for the reply. The history here is that although my Dad had a full-time job as an engineer, he would occasionally “jam” with several members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in his spare time. So I guess he was pretty good, or they wouldn’t have let him participate. After he passed away, I asked if I could have his violin. Much to my dismay, she had sold it! So now I just want to have a presentable violin that looks playable, to hang on my wall.

Hey Paul...I just had one put on my very inexpensive violin and it works great. A luthier can do that pretty easy and it's not going to break you if you're just trying to get playable. Just my two cents.

Nut is not the hardest thing install on a fiddle if you have some wood skills and the proper glue (hide), but if you have a luthier near by, it's probably best to take it there.

Unless you have a specific need for a 3/4 size violin, perhaps it's best used as a wall hanger. I'm certainly sympathetic to those who would like to see it made playable first, and why not, but without a nut it's going to look like a broken, unstrung fiddle.

The nut has to be fitted to the instrument. You can buy partially shaped nuts, but they still need a lot of adjustment before they can be used. As mentioned above, though, having a new nut put on doesn't cost much at all.
Here is an article that shows how a proper nut is made:
