I have read that some users recommend letting the glue crystals soak up cold water overnight before heating the mixture, but others specify that 30 minutes to an hour is enough. Is there a reason for the overnight soak and if so what is it?

I have heard that too, and I'm sure it would be alright to do that. On the other hand, I never have done that and haven't suffered glue failures. I'm not sure why soaking it cold so long would make any difference. I typically mix the glue cold and heat it to 140° over half an hour or so. After that I will add glue or hot water to maintain the consistency how I want it. When adding more glue I'll generally let it sit in the batch for half an hour or so. Thinning the batch I'll add the water and go.

I too would like to know more about it.

I’ve never heard of soaking the glue overnight. Glue manufacturers recommend 30 minutes or so. That’s all that’s really needed to hydrate the crystals. You could leave it longer, but I doubt there would be any noticeable benefit. Some people don’t bother soaking the glue at all before heating it, but I’ve found it to be better when soaked.
