I try to remember that many of these tunes were dance tunes. I try to keep it between 100-120 beats per minute. Do you like Fraley's music?

That's an interesting take on "June Apple" . Not one I particularly care for (my personal tastes), but nice. Also probably just a tad faster than our circle plays it.

I still haven't figured out the 120 bpm thing, even though I have a fair understanding of music theory and tempos. I just get mixed up because so much OT stuff is now written in 4/4 time when it may have been in 2/4, that unless I can find a 1/4 note bpm (like a metronome setting), I just have to guess at a close to proper speed. I do like the 100-120 instead of the more common 120-160 speeds that are more common.
I haven't really concentrated on listening to specific fiddlers, so I'm not specifically aware of hearing JP, but I'm sure he appears somewhere on the stuff I have in my library. I will have to take a look and hunt for some of his stuff. My main influence so far seems to be Tommy Jarrell, I've really enjoyed the CDs I have of his playing.

Tommy Jarrell's playing of June Apple was considerably faster than this. Like Brad, I'm a little confused by "modern day" counting, but by my reckoning, Tommy's recording is about 125 bbm, and this one is more like 100. Also like Brad I think it works pretty well at different tempos.

Seems like I remember reading Chip Arnold discuss this on the BanjoHangout and the 100-120 BPM was the standard for dances.
I like to mix up the tempos as many before me have. One tune that sounds great slowed down is Speed the Plow. If you take Darling Nellie Grey and slow it down you get Faden Love.
