Wow, I may be on the way to greatness! I have two fiddles, a Kennedy Chinese job (that I had to revamp a bit to get it to play half way decent (high action at the nut and really high relief on the fingerboard and a GEWA that I bought from "The Bluegrass Shack" that was set up perfectly. Both, $400.00 fiddle outfits. Service from the Bluegrass Shack was outstanding. She set up the fiddle just as I'd asked for. The Kennedy, not anywhere close.
I tried several sets of strings in the 2 1/2 years I've been playing the fiddle and settled on ---- wait for it, Prims on the Kennedy and Chromcor's on the GEWA. I did try the Helicore's on both fiddles but got a bit frustrated with the A string not being able to maintain tune. No unraveling of the windings that have been mentioned on many posts on the FHO, just wonky. I really like the Chromcor's and Prims. The Chromcor's are a bit more "refined" in tone but the Prims sound good on the Kennedy and are a bit louder. I"ve been using Kaplan Dark and Magic rosin and don't notice much difference. They both seem to work pretty well.
And my second improvement in my fiddle journey was the purchase of a JonPaul Fusion bow! Prior to the Fusion, I had a CODA NX that cost twice as much but, it really didn't "speak to me". The thumb pad was giant and uncomfortable. The tone was great but, it didn't "glide over the strings" so I sold it to a friend. I bought the Fusion from the FiddlerShop. It "plays" effortlessly when compared to the NX. The Fiddlershop offers a lifetime warranty on the Fusion (not the hair, of course) and I bought the Chromcor's from them as well. I also have a couple of $35.00 KMise C.F. bows (Amazon) that are a close second to the Fusion if you can believe that and I play them quite a bit (to save me from having to ever worry about re-hairing the Fusion).
Now, if I can live another 10-15 years, I might be able to play as well as you! But, I'd bet I'm having as much fun as you or any other "newbie" on the fiddle right now! Good thing. At age, almost 75, I'm not sure I'll make it another 15 years.

Well, this is not a creative or original version...I am new to fiddling, so far the best I can do is learn/copy from other people's versions! I learned this tune slow from Rayna Gellert's YT, and practice it with Strum Machine:

I've got a viola lying around gathering dust (my daughter took lessons for a few years), I never even thought to try it with fiddle tunes but I realize it could be quite satisfying. And I've been kind of eyeing the 5-stringers too...
Random Music Thoughts -
- For me, Winder Slide is only about a week old, so after it ferments (festers?) for a few more weeks, maybe something that is a bit more ME (instead of pale imitation of Reyna) will grow? And she's got this great relaxed shuffle rhythm in her version, I can kind of get that when I play with her YT but I lose it when I play with Strum Machine (it's hard when the chords are going along straight with no "swing"). But I covet her rhythm...
- While recording I played it several times in a row, each time thinking, "I can do better than that." But when I went back and listened, I liked my FIRST take the best...Recording is so weird, LOL!

I find it funny to read you are new to fiddling, you sound to me like a pro.
That you can copy others must mean you are that good, if I try to copy others I always sound different, I just cannot do this, I always invent an own simplified version of the tune I hear haha and cherish hope that one day I might start to sound like 'them' <3

Anja, I could never sound like someone else much either, always sounded so contrived and overworked whenever I tried...I just simplify and do the tunes my own way...the only way I can manage, it seems. We're all different...some people can grab onto the styles of the great fiddlers from the past or even current great fiddlers, and some people just sit down and figure up their own way, however they can manage. It's all fun and we are very lucky that the world is filled with both types of fiddlers! All types of fiddling are great fun.

Thanks Anja, I just started fiddling last summer, but I played violin (classical) for many years growing up. That technical training enables me to copy people if they play slowly enough. BUT fiddling is so much more than technical stuff - just because I can copy their notes, doesn't make me a good fiddler...
Peggy is right, everybody has their own unique path and style, and what's best is if you sound like your own musical self!

But I agree although I have no further ideas on what's coming next, that fiddling is much more than technical stuff, but I'm just here figuring out the basics so far so in fact I wouidn't know because I'd be happy with all of the technique :p I hope my own musical self can make people dance one day! ;-)

In that video Reyna plays it fast at first, but don't go away...
when she repeats it, she goes slower...and slower...and slower...(I actually have no idea how she manages to do that without getting lost!) By the later parts of the video, you can hear/see everything she does!

Yes, but I stretch some notes too long, like the B in here, that might change the rhythm. I never have the rhythm right from the first time, I mean I can still read notes a bit, but I am not that good haha.
