I appreciate your enthusiasm--

I have been to other sites where they don't want a whole bunch of postings that almost resemble email or texts, just thoughtful ones with a 'take.'  Maybe to save space or moderator workload?

Anyway, I think most on here have a lot of other responsibilities to juggle along with music, so that kind of limits the traffic.  Conversely, a sports message board is packed with people of an age that don't have much else to do except buy the stuff in the ads and flame each other.

I am new, so I hesitate to initiate a post until I see what folks are interested in.  Don't want to be the cowboy walking through the saloon doors and the music suddenly stops and the whole room stares.

Personally, I'm interested in gardening, so if you have any tips for growing better tomatoes I'd like to hear 'em.

Inspect for hornworms every day, especially in July (in the upper South).

Too much nitrogen just makes for more leaves....Personally, I get my tomatoes from Chickenmans's garden..You are on the right track.. Humor is better than sarcasm  when it comes to keeping a topic alive..unless you know the members well.

A lot posted here DOES resemble emails or texts, a lot is one on one communication .. and a lot of it is just chatter. Anyone can join in .. It is a Hangout.. just like people sitting on a porch bantering... That is how I view it and it is how I USE it.. Look at the "More busking stories" topic.. It is pretty much my personal BLOG.. Seldom does anyone get involved.. however I've had personal messages saying how much some members enjoy it so it is to Them..the unseen , to whom I write..

I'm not lacking in fulfillment then it comes to the Hangout..I'm responding to people who have told me that there is nothing on it for them.. Well, THEM.. Make it something for YOU, or don't complain.. Don't wait to see what others are doing.. DO something yourself.. You might be surprised at how much people would love your contribution..

I thought of this stupid analogy... You buy a bunch of baby chickens.. You love to watch them.. they are delightful.. Then they die... You have to not just watch and wait to see what happens.. you have to FEED them, WATER them... pay attention to them.. Same on the Hangout..... OK.. I've vented... throw tomatoes.. (from Doug and Chickenman's gardens.)...

BTW Three of my very best fiddle friends on the Hangout  who I met in person are  "Cornfed', Bsed', and Chickenman.....I would not have met them if I hadn't stuck  my neck out there to see what happens..No effort=no results........

With respect, in that I'm sure you know, online boards exist only because someone pays the bills; I don't know how this one works except for maybe sponsors?  There's not a 'pay' level to this board, therefore it appears so.  The reason I, as a newbe, reserve starting posts is that I don't want to un-necessarily load up the server, which someone has to tend.

I value your suggestion, and I will put something, of interest to me, out there soon in order to: comment on/laugh at/roll eyes upon reading, etc

Regarding chickens, around here you not only have to feed and water, but also plug up the run against what we call 'chicken snakes', possums, coons, and skunks.  And, unfortunately, as long as they are 'cheeping' (a long time), our farm cat Shadow (pronounced 'Shadder' in the Ozarks).

Joining the Players Union (which looks to be $20/year + cost of a t-shirt, if desired) is one way to support Fiddle Hangout. More information under "More"  and then "Players Union."

I don't think we need to worry about cluttering the server with posts -- but it's just personal opinion. I suspect a few more threads with lively discussion would make it easier to sell advertising, for example. :)

I joined the Hangout when I was just starting to play and at that time it seemed like there were a lot of us who were new to fiddle and I felt a wonderful sense of support and camaraderie -- which I miss.

I just watched a hilarious SNL skit called 'Romano Tours'... Basically it says that if you are SAD at home you may still be SAD on the tour...They can get you into a wine tasting, but can't control how much YOU drink..They are saying that you take YOU wherever you go.  Don't blame the Tour if you are still YOU when you are touring...That is YOUR responsibility...

That got me thinking...Could it be that what members think of the Hangout is a reflection of how they think of themselves? I don't know..If a person is generally disgruntled in life, it seems that they may be disgruntled by the Hangout...Angry people may get angry on the Hangout.....Funny people will find something funny on the Hangout..

I'm a 'talker' and I TALK on the Hangout......Hmmmm....seems logical. smiley

Fiddle Hangout owner/webmaster here...

Using the site (including posting on the forum) helps the site survive! So don't worry about cluttering up the server... the more posts, the more content, the more traffic... the more healthy the site is.

Re: disgruntled/angry people on the Hangout. Someone told me when I started playing the fiddle a true musician is never satisfied. Always some way or other to improve regardless of wether it's technique or how a particular tune is played.  Maybe this be the reason some of us tend to be a bit cranky? Actually picking up the fiddle at a relatively late stage in life, and I think a lot of folks on this forum are in the same category, may change that outlook.

True..Musicians are always trying to improve.. While being disgruntled is not a crime and it may be a REASON that some Members don't participate,  it should not keep people away.. Hey, hangout with other disgruntled members.. Start a topic about it.. You'll have lots of support.. make it humorous, make fun of yourself.. smiley

Hey Lee - by a "changed outlook" what mean is sure you still want to improve, but hell, you're too damn old to be any good so just have fun. And that's what I've been doing for the last 8 years. I spent 45 years in veterinary medicine, 30 of them as a vet school professor before taking up the fiddle after retirement. It turned out to be one of the most gratifying things I ever did at any age. Playing music gives and keeps giving on many levels. What really bothers me is a common belief that unless you start playing a fiddle before age 10 you can never learn how. Three years ago I started teaching a 6 week course for novice fiddlers which is sponsored by a fiddle club I joined. At the end of 6 weeks I'm always amazed at how most folks are able to play a few simple tunes. Some have stayed with it and are now members of the club. So yeah, lots of ways to be upbeat and positive.

Rich, is sounds like you would be a great mentor.. Start some beginner subject topics... You'll be able to speak from first hand experience.. A few years ago we asked the question, "How old were you when you started playing a fiddle?" I was amazed to find out how many of our Hangout members didn't start until they were 50 or 60 years old!!! I didn't start until I was 30.

I just like to hang out here. I like the people. I love hearing folks play their fiddles. Yeah, sometimes the focus is a little too focused on old time for my tastes but that's okay. One of the gifts of the internet is that it encourages narrow-casting; the chance for like-minded folks to gather and show their stuff, no matter how far they might be from each other geographically. Let's hear it for the 21st Century! Okay, maybe not...

I wish that members WOULD discuss styles of fiddling other than just Old Time!!! Really..

Will anyone agree with me? If you make a post... have it edited!!! I've stuck my foot into my mouth so often lately that I now use licorice as shoe laces soze at least I'll have some good flavor when the shoe goes in..
Also, If YOU make an insulting, snarky comment on someone's post.. APOLOGIZE or remove the comment.. What member wants to get involved when people are being MEAN..???

DougD - Posted - 07/20/2019:  17:29:59

One person's "snarky" comment is another person's rational response to a silly or pretentious statement or position. Who's to decide?
My wish would be that members learn to read a little better.

There is only 15 minutes to edit posts. By the time I finish breakfast it's too late.

So I'll apologize here...

Lee , I am sorry that I insulted you and for making snarky comments.

And I promise to read a little better in future.

Please keep posting your interesting topics.

Hmm.  I wasn't expecting an apology.. but It is accepted..I have made snarky comments also, and have more than once sent personal messages containing apologies... I'll promise to try to make my comments more 'readable' and less political..heart And, you are right about th 15 minute edit time.. Almost every post I've made, including THIS one is edited..I'm constantly thinking  "oh, I and I Should have said, " or, "Wait, that's not what I meant "  , and the constant , "Boy, I'm in trouble now!!" and it is often too late..

Laughing at myself.. When I posted the comment about snarky comments and saw that the first two responders were Doug D, and Buckhenry.. I actually LOGGED OUT ... I didn't want to read their comments because I was sure they were going to 'nail' me about something.. After a good night of sleep I read their comments... Both polite and no arguments.. SO... See how I build up things in my mind ? As it has been said, "I have met my enemy, and it is...ME."
