I loved this tune the first time I heard it & had to learn it.
One of the "standards" of Canadian fiddlin.

I posted a comment on your homepage, but I'll repeat it here - Really good job, Tim.

This tune gets played every week at our session..... Ward Allen wrote some great tunes.

We usually through in "Back to the Sugar Camp " as part of a medley.

Other favorites are Maple Leaf Two Step, Frisco Waltz, Frenchie's Reel that we play all the time.

Good job Tim.

Play Happy

Simon St Pierre played the Brandywine fester in the 70's and Maple Sugar and Joys of Quebec became prominent jam tunes for a while in my circle of friends back then. Got to dust those old gems off.

Great to see our 'Canadian' gems getting universally played. They remain cornerstones in here in New Brunswick.

Hi Folks

Interesting posts on Maple Sugar, I listened to several youtube.com versions. Familiar tune I have heard at the local fiddlers a few times I think. Did some searching and turns out to be a Ward Allen (1924 - 1965) Canadian favorite. Funny how many different ways it is played in a half dozen or so videos. I ran down some dots and an abc file and background if any of you are interested. Could not get the concertina abc decoder to work with the Intelbiblio file http://www.concertina.net/ tune-o-tron: converter.

Also took a cut at fiddle tabs on the Allen melody. Think I will listen and muddle with is on my beginner fiddle. Nice tune.

http://www.ibiblio.org/ Arts and Recreation, Music, Fiddlers Companion link.

http://www.ibiblio.org/fiddlers/index.html has a background on Maple Sugar

Also some dots/sheet music try http://www.dulcimers.com/tunes/maplesugar.html

The A part is in the key of D and the B part in A. I found another melody and a double stop version but have not recalled the sites with the A part in A and the B part in D.

Enjoy Don Redmond Oregon

hendrid - We had a little discussion about this tune some time back - you might find it interesting: http://www.fiddlehangout.com/forum/...D=2290#51154

You'll hear it played in several keys, but Ward Allen played it in A, with a short section in E, just like TimK. This is a nice video, with the original recording as the soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIYRYZHZYJc

You have to take out the spaces between lines when you paste abc files from the Fiddler's Companion into concertina.net. Its explained at the top of each page.

Have fun with "Maple Sugar." Its a classic tune for sure.

Thanks Doug.

Appreciate the old forun info. Probably should noodle with your TimK and youtube version. The Dulcimer version is in D and seems simpler but will have to work up the A and E version. Thanks again. I really like that melody.

Thanks to all who posted comments on this thread and my home page! Maple Sugar is a great tune, eay For those who are unfamiliar with Canadian fiddling, I hope this tune wet your appetite & you'll listen to more. There is some mighty fine fiddling going on north of the boarder
