I posted about my "Year of Ward Jarvis," but I was hoping to get a little feedback on my progress. I've been working on "Head of the Creek" the past month or so, and decided to do a quick and dirty recording the other day. I think I sound tentative in my playing, but would like to hear from others. This is played in AEAE.

I like it. I do agree that you are playing slightly tentative, but it works. Makes it sound kind of "high lonesome".   Good job, and kind of a tough tune.

You have a good authentic sound; it’s easy to tell you’ve been working on it. Bump up the speed just a little and that tune will smooth right out. That just comes with time playing it and getting comfortable with the tune. I like what you’re doing.

I went to slippery hill and listened to Wade and what jumps out at me is how he keeps his finger on the 'a' note while playing that figure on the coarse part so it just rings. I'm not getting that here but I do hear some open 'a' touches in the fine part that you could develop more. It sounds like you have the tune under your fingers pretty solid, and that is about a third of the battle. I couldn't say half because the battle is never won, the target just keeps getting smaller and moves more. 

I'm going to get out my fiddle and see if my ears are getting that right.

Thanks for the tip. I know I'm missing something of the droning. I'll work on holding that A in the low part. I'm still working on making the transition from learning by printed sources to learning more by ear. I know it'll get easier the more tunes I learn this way, but it still feels a bit like some mystic alchemy.
