I wonder if we could work up lists of tunes that are commonly played in the various tunings. I'd like to see such a list; I think it might be a big help for folks.

What do you think: should we start up threads here for each of the tunings and then toss out titles of tunes we commonly play/hear in those tunings?

Once the threads quiet down, we could assemble the lists on pdf and make them available on this site.

Great listing. This list does look to be more specifically for banjo.

I do see a few odd tunings that are absent. Most notably Dead Man's Tuning (DDAD).

A few other missing fiddle tunings would be GDAD, GDBD, EEAE, BEBE, and AEF#C#. There are many more.

Marion Thede notated a version of Old Dan Tucker played in that tuning. It is played in the key of D, but almost works out as the mixolydian mode with A as the tonic. She attributes it to W.S. Collins of Oklahoma. She doesn't offer any notes on the arrangement or the tuning.

I tabledited it real quick and put it up on my website. Thede suggests a tempo of 120/bpm, which seems a tad fast.

I picked up Christian Wig's latest CD from him at Mt Airy a few weeks ago. "Chadwell's Station - Fiddling on the Frontier"

It's just Chris and Whitt Mead. It's got all sorts of tunings for fiddle and banjo.

Some of the fiddle tunings are

F#C#G#D#
F#C#F#C#
GCGD
FCGD
DAEA
EBEB

Some of these I know are just standard tunings down a half step or something but it makes for interesting listening and the liner notes and art work are spectacular.

Marion Thede's book is a great reference. I find it really interesting to play through her transcriptions and attempt to recreate the same notes and bowings she meticulously recorded.

I totally agree......the Thede collection is a treasure. WS Collins was the father of Earl, Max, and Bill. He can be heard on reel-to-reel recording made in the 50s(?), I think? He originally came from Missouri and in the 70s Uncle Elsie Collins was still living in the area (which, by the way, was near Bob Holt's neck of the woods). They all played extremely fast. Coincidence? I think not.
