Attention Round Peak fans!

Tommy Jarrell and banjoist Blanton Owen stayed with us for a week when they were in Seattle in 1975 doing performances at the presentations in our region of Mike Seeger’s 1975 American Old Time Music Festival.  After one of the concerts, Jarrell and Owen sat on the couch in our living room, about fifteen listeners sat on the floor, and they did a two hour presentation.  This was recorded to an Ampex 350-2 recorder using a pair of Sony C37FET studio microphones in spaced stereo configuration.  This entire performance, talking and all, can be found on our web site at voyagerrecords.com. Click on the microphone or “Northwest Fiddle Field Recordings Selections MP3 Format” at the right top of the home page to navigate to the fiddle field recordins page.  Scroll down to “Jarrell” and you will find the links to the concert mp3 files.  To facilitate downloading, the performance has been broken down into thirteen segments, titled “Jarrell 1,” “Jarrell 2,” etc.  These files are large and may take several minutes to download on a broadband internet connection.  The files can be reassembled in order in an audio editing program if desired, to have the entire performance in one file.  Incidentally, if your computer is running virus scans or the like while trying to play the files, they may sound distorted and noisy, depending on the hardware resources in your computer.

Wow!  Big thanks to you both. Its quite a bit different to hear Tommy himself than to hear others play those tunes.

I think the whole page, not only the Tommy Jarrell section, is a great treasure. I have downloaded a lot of the mp3s.

It was interesting to see that several players and several tunes had a connection to Sweden and to Scandinavia!

It was Tommy Jarrell that got me focused on old time fiddling. When I was starting out and trying to find my "voice," a friend gave me a record of him - "Sail Away Ladies." This was around 1977 - so about the same era of this recording in the above post. His playing was visceral and just resonated with my DNA. I couldn't get enough of TJ!  I never met him, but I really felt a kinship - a connection - through the music he played that also connected me to my ancestors who came to TX from NC.

Mr. Jarrell played at the World's Fair in Knoxville, TN in 1982 and I got to see him. It was drizzling, the crowd was thin (and wet) and the show was on break, so I walked up behind the bandstand to see if I could meet him. His "handlers' were sneering and condescending ("Have you ever heard of the Skillet Lickers, BOY??), but Tommy was sitting alone out in the middle of the covered stage with his fiddle, so I just walked out there and introduced myself. He was a completely humble, friendly, and unassuming man, was interested in what kind of fiddling was done in Missouri, and we had a very pleasant five minute conversation. I look back very fondly on that moment.
