Mississippi Sawyer has for a long time one of those tunes on my "too learn" list - feels good to switch it to the "tunes I already play" list. It has kinda been relegated to the "overplayed tunes" list around here, even though at one point it had its own category at many a fiddle contest in the early 20th century. Funny how that happens, especially since it is chock-full of potential on so many levels.

Gotta say that I've really enjoyed the previous postings, as well. I'm glad that people are excited about a project like this - and thanks again to the organizers! I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing more as we get closer to March 15th.

Just for the heck of it, here's one of my favorite recordings of Mississippi Sawyer as done by Earl Johnson and His Clodhoppers. Enjoy!

Does he get that "wah-wah-wah-wah" sound just from repeated slides, or is there something else going on? I'm not sure I like that sound as music, but it certainly is fun (which is more important in my book, generally).

Here's a clip of Mississippi Sawyer at a barn dance (actually a church hall) a few months ago. Notice the "C" chord in the B part of the tune. I probably have a few more variations to the tune than I did at that point. Always evolving & learning.

N Carolina Fiddler, thanks! Sounding good! I enjoyed listening to your version very much! As to the Earl Johnson...I've heard people play that way and it really appeals to e...it's very playful-sounding...he changes things around in a playful way everytime through and mixes up rhythms and such to where it's almost comical...also extremely crooked...I liked it s lot and reminds me of people I used to hear a lot...like, the fiddle was an instrument that was sort of dramatic...either clowning around playfully or taking a dark, modal lonesome tune and wailing like a lonesome wolf...anyway I liked hearing it...I would wonder if his wa-wahs are slides combined with saw strokes, but don't know for sure, of course. Now as to the square dancing Mississippi sawyer link...well my iPad still ain't working right with YouTube, so I have to stare at a black screen and just listen...but whether they are clapping on the beat...I don't niw fr sure bit I think square dancers might do it that way because of the beat they follow dancing...again, I couldn't see t and really don't knw for sure. Anyway...we seem to be getting more Mississippi sawyers coming....keep em coming in...josh s giving away a t shirt ths time around! And well I, for one, sincerely hope our next tune has a shorter, easier-to-type title...bt until then, we gotta keep on typing ad playing Mississippi sawyer! I still might try to get another one up too, if I can. Let's all just keep doin what we can before we run out of time!

yeah it's weird how life gets in the way of our fiddling... we were supposed to work today, hubby got kinda sick so we didn't... then I kept thinking of twin fiddling Mississippi Sawyer... so I tried playing it in A (to avoid having to go up the fingerboard too much) and thought it might be something I could work out... got out the ol' guitar and plucked around with it in A... had planned to record it on the ipad on the guitar that way in A, and then see if I could mess around with it enough to know if I could do it with the twin fiddling ... then other stuff, unexpected stuff as usual, happened... blam!  There goes my plan for my Mississippi Sawyer in A on twin fiddles... now this week will be very busy... then next week I'll be working in Tennessee where we have no access to internet, etc., and I'll be away from all of this virtual good stuff for probably the whole week... then our time with this tune will be getting close to ending...  don't know if I can manage the thing in A before we go on to the next tune or not... we'll see... everybody else... let's see whatcha got going with Mississippi Sawyer!

Well, this is embarrassing, but I feel I'm among friends...LOL... but we were working over the weekend, hubby felt terrible and it seems two abscessed teeth blew up on him, we went to urgent dental and got one pulled and tomorrow he has oral surgery for the other... so I'll be taking care of him for the rest of the week (no loud screeching fiddles to make his sore jaw throb!) and then we are going to TN to work down there and there won't be any instruments around me or internet access, by the time we get back it'll almost be time for our next tune... so I figure take advantage of an hour or two today to try my brilliant idea for Mississippi Sawyer or I'm outta time/ outta luck... anyuway, I've gone over my time and supposed to babysit in about 3 minutes from now... so enough excuses... here goes):  youtu.be/d5HfMRHXc0g   which was spawned off of this, youtu.be/bUd01lddgYs  Which, in turn, was spawned off a guitar picking little youtube, which all were spawned from my wacky head in the first place.  I really wixsh I'd have had more time to think about and try this out... these are all pretty much off`the`cuff and in the rough, but I'm pressed for timne and won't have another opportunity until close to the 15th!  Maybe not really then either.  Come on, now, I put up embarrassing videos... where's the rest of your-all's?????  Come on, runnin' outta time!

Mikeyboy...I really like it...sounds impressive. The bowing is cool...like long saw strokes and then short oes on those A parts....wow, sounds like the bobbing trunks hung up in the river...the B parts were nice too...mellow and sweet. Very nice version! Sounds like a keeper to me! Barry... Anxiously waiting for whatever you can get posted...I'm sure it will be nice! Come on, people...tick, tock is happening!!!!

Thanks Peggy!  I played it a bunch of different ways (slow, choppy, fast, super fast), but I like the path I'm on.  Been listening to Texas Shorty's CD "Old Sport" a lot lately, I really like his phrasing and how smooth his bowing is.  I kind of had him in mind while playing this version (not saying I sound anything like him, but at least trying to read from his chapter of the fiddling encyclopedia). There is a wonderful website called the Fiddler's Companion:  ibiblio.org/fiddlers/  It includes information about tunes, including sources for notation and recordings. Frequently there is notation for some tunes - there are three versions of "Mississippi Sawyers." It is in "abc" notation, but if you follow the directions at the top of each page it can easily be converted into standard notation. I'm sure there are other sources too.

Hey you guys...we've had some slight variation in our travel/ work plans, for about the millionth time, but once we head for Tennessessee I'll be off line fr several days and won't get to listen to these...please keep 'em coming because the suspense wiill be killing me!!! Hey, taking a break from packing up to leave...all the ridiculous packing is making me a nervous wreck and I'll be glad to just get back home...lol...we still have to go before we get back...have to take tons of tools, something to keep warm with...no heat...food, a way to cook it...two dogs, their food, etc., I just get nervous getting all this stuff ready to go. Anyway I sat down to take a break and was poking around on YouTube and found a guy wearing a 3 stooges Larry T-shirt...guy with a big beard, just playing the daylights right outta Mississippi Sawyer...then I saw underneath it said for VFF...ok, now I've had some trouble keeping up this time...all this running back and forth plus getting ready for our trip to TN, but I looked here real quick, which I shouldn't be doing because there is a lt to do and limited time and here I am...lol...but Im not seeing this guys tune up here...so I'm confused... Maybe sometimes I get people confused and I find out who I thought were wo different people on FB r YouTube turn out to be the same person...but wanna make sure everybody sees him play...my gosh his fidde was on fire!!!! Good, good playin!!!! But I'm confused and really need to get back to work... Anybody know who he s on here...oh gee it's three o'clock already...gotta get back to packing!!!

 Afraid I'm going to have to sit this one out Peggy - just don't have time.  Our at-home business has turned into a full-time job, and in the fiddling world I'm very busy helping a student of mine get some last minute lessons in before a big performance.  Maybe next month...Hope you'll all understand!
