I knew I would open a can of worms on this question.  The tape came off and I'm doing fine, not always hitting pitch exactly, but better than I thought I would; and I can actually "hear" when I am off.  I am 60 years old, had absolutely no background in music, so I think I'm glad I used the tape in the beginning; but I've finally graduated up and it is actually quite exciting!!!

Thank you all for your responses.

Sharon

Congrats Sharon. It must be exciting for you...keep up the great work and practice the scales that your working in slowly....play a note..stop and think...is it in tune. Yes...keep playing each note this way up the scale. If the note is wrong try and figure out if the note is flat or sharp. ...DON'T wiggle around until you find it. Start again and play that note again..once you hit the note and the intonation is perfect play the note again and again so you HEAR the correct intonation. This is a good way to TRAIN your ears for the correct pitch. Not paying attention to correct pitch on EACH note is training your ear to hear the imperfect tone and also training your muscle memory for the same incorrect pitch.
See the website...violinlab. com...check out the beginners series and see the video about intonation and ways to correct it. Have fun and stay tuned. Diane
