Les Raber is a great favorite of mine. I have his book and one of his CDs.

Until this post, I did not know of Mr. Raber and his fiddling, but I found this:

His Michigan repertoire is more representative of what I call "northern tier" fiddling, influenced by Scandinavian, German and some eastern European immigrant traditions, as well as WW1 era pop music.

I knew Les Raber. He was a wonderful man and fiddler. I love his great collection of beautuful old dance tunes. I play Ten Strike & a Bb hornpipe that I just call Les Raber's Hornpipe. Dot & I picked him up at his house and drove him to the Folk Alliance Conference the year that it was held in Cleveland, OH. That was a very fun trip.
Paul Tyler has many hours of field recordings of Les Raber. Beautiful stuff. He and I attended Les' funeral.
I'm happy that someone brought him up here.
