I've noticed that some cases come with a sack or bag, usually made of satin or silk. Is this something that is routinely used with a case? Does a blanket provide sufficient protection?

I use a fiddle bag or sack mostly in the winter time when there is a problem keeping the humidity level up in the house. I use a humidifier in the house to keep the humidity level at about 45 to 50 %. In my violin case I use a small humidifier and keep the violin in the bag to help hold in the humidity. You can make a humidifier by using a plastic round film container. Punch holes in the top and cut a small piece of sponge to go inside it. Wet the sponge and put it in the film container put the cap on and place it in your case. It works great.

Your humidifier tip works; it's the same that we recommend for mandolins.

Flour sacks work just fine. Burlap feed-sacks are a bit rough.

I would think that a flour sack would be a little bit to big. The fiddle bag is made to fit the fiddle. Southwest Strings has a nice silk bag with a drawstring for I think around $8.00.

I'm surprised that folks actually use them. Given the history of them with fiddles, I thought they would have gone by the wayside when affordable cases came about.

With that said, I plan on getting a silk one - maybe just for nostalgia's sake.

Flour sacks is just right for tossin' in the fiddle, then slinging it over your shoulder. Caint do that with them fancy, silk, girly sacks. Show up at a jam with your fiddle in one of them, and folks'll think you've been on a panty raid!

You may have a point. Should I be worried about the material scratching the service?
