Does anyone have experience using the Zoom H2 recorder ? Having one of these recorders would be a handy thing to have. I could use it for lessons, jams, workshops, etc.. I have read several online reviews and everybody seems to like them.

My main concern is fidelity. The fiddle is a difficult instrument to record. The range is so great it really makes recording difficult. I want to use this recorder when I practice, then listen to the playback and hear what needs work.

I purchased a Zoom H2 a couple of months ago and I'm very satisfied with the fidelity. I chose this model based on reviews and word of mouth, so I didn't compare other brands and models. But, I've been impressed with it.

A word of caution...when I record myself practicing, mistakes are recorded with great clarity!

I've got one, and have not the least bit regretted the purchase. As to fidelity, you have the option of setting the sample rate up to 96kHz for a WAV file, with a bit-depth of either 24 or 16, for stereo mode. If you were to then take those files for editing, then compression, you'd have some nice recording-quality material for transfer onto CD.

Here's another option for you, Dick. Look at the MXL 990-USB microphone. You can then record directly to your computer via an open USB port.

Sounds like you want to do the same things I do.

I use a Digital Voice Recorder, an Olympus WS-300M, that cost me about $100. It will record in stereo, and downloads to the computer as WMA files. These can be converted to WAV, MP3, or a couple of other formats with a cheap (I think about $10) program called EasyWMA.

The recorder will record up to 4 hours in HiFi Stereo, and uses 1 AAA battery. The only drawback to the unit is it is only about 1.5X3.75X.5 in size.
