All the instructional material I have seen that pertained to playing in higher positions was designed for violinists. I don't know why there isn't a book/CD combination that teaches a fiddler how to play in the 2nd/3rd position. Included would be exercises and notation for commonly played fiddle tunes. Then, fiddlers would have the melody already memorized, and fiddlers could more easily work on their intonation. The instructional would describe situations where a shift change is beneficial. Learning tunes like this would provide a fiddler with material that could be used as part of their playing repertoire. Understanding the musical principles involved would also help.

When most fiddlers change positions, the quality of their tone drops off quite a bit. I am not talking about an occasional "C" or "D" note on the E string, but times when you actually move your whole hand up to another playing position. I have heard fiddlers who sound fine when playing in the first position, but sound like another person when they change position.

I wish I were younger and had the background some fiddlers have. I think that there are many instances where instructional needs exist, but instructors/books/DVDs are not available. Would you buy a book/CD or DVD that explained things like -

1. Playing well in the 2nd/3rd positions.
2. Understanding, creating, and using double stops.
3. Effective use of ornamentation in _ _ _ _ _ fiddling. Each style of fiddling would require a separate instructional.
4. Shuffles - how, why, when, and where.

These are just a couple of things that come to mind. Today, DVD's and internet sessions could provide better instruction than face-to-face instruction.
