I'm pleased that - so far - no ice, only snow, bitter cold (our little lake froze over night before last) . And we haven't lost power. Been out once, roads are passable. Bright sunshine this morning - but 16F outside.
I'm thinking the snow maybe here for little while - only one daytime temperature over the rest of this week will be high enough to melt anything - then it plunges right back down again - if the forecast is right. Monday starts to improve.
I'm scared to go out and check on the garden.

In the ground / not counting perennials / we have California Early and Red Inchem Garlic, Yellow and White Onions, bunching onions, Fava (Broad) Beans; Collards, Chives, Cilantro, French Fingerling Potatoes, and Cabbage. I did have Broccoli, Bok Choy, and Lettuce = but I harvested them, knowing they wouldn't survive. I had carrots planted too, but they were too young to survive an earlier freeze last week.
I've mulched everything with about 4" if dried leaves - and cover a lot in freeze blankets. We'll see it that worked - this is a long cold spell and won't be over until next week (if the forecast is right).
And more stuff starting in the little greenhouse. I've been real please to see that the inside temps of the greenhouse have not dipped lower than 40F. All the seedlings - I hope - should bounce right back.

Bitter cold, Tony? How soon they forget.![]()
We had month and half where average daily temperature was 10F, lots of below 0, I think got down -30 a few times at my part of town; (big last heating bill)... week or so ago finally got into 20s for high, and bit of snow. New system with balmy warm spell of 32F, and continue into next week. Comes with about 10-12" snow at front, already started.
Roads/streets still pretty packed down snow, from last few weeks; little slick, esp at intersections; and rutty, like driving over potholes. (even on some main roads). I definitely need new studs, and shocks. Maybe will warm enough see pavement by end of next week? ![]()

Wow, Tony...impressive. We've got 14 inches of snow that is pretty frozen solid because of subzero temps...so...ain't nothin' to be found in my garden right now...lol...but I am thinkin' about it for a few weeks from now. I gave up on collards and cabbage because those doggone cabbage worms eat it up faster than those can grow...I used to grow collards all through some winters, not all. But I don't like poisons and I haven't found any other way to get rid of those little caterpillars. I grow Asian greens and sweet tater greens mainly now because the bugs don't like 'em...but they're hot weather greens. Gotta wait for 'em. If I get hungry, I'll come to your house, Tony...lol.
Lotsa snow here…well about 5” which is a lot for NC. I had a funny/sad snow memory…
My husband and I grew up in the north, and played in feet of snow as kids. Our kids have grown up in NC, where there is usually less than an inch of snow (if any).Anyway we got a big snow one winter (6” +) and they were scooping up snow and carrying it over to one spot and making a little hill there. I said, “What are you doing?”
They said, “Making a snowman!”
I said, “Try this!” I showed them how to make a snowball and roll it around as it got bigger and bigger, until it got so big and heavy that it was hard to push…and use that as their snowman base. And roll another for middle and head.
They were excited! They were “rolling balls” all afternoon and showed the other kids on the street and eventually every house with kids had a tall classic ‘northern-style’ 3-ball snowman standing in its yard. It was funny to me that these “southern kids” didn’t know about rolling balls in the snow? Anyway, good memories :-)
Our kids are off to college and adult lives now - so it’s a little sad to not have somebody in the house excited about snow.

I'm no entomologist, but I kinda doubt it. I'm from Mississippi and two of the most unholy skeeter swarms I've ever seen were in Utah and Alaska!

LOL - We lived in Alaska for 14 years. The running joke was that the mosquito was the unofficial Alaskan state bird.
Cold weather doesn't kill bugs...they're just snoozing away and waiting to get you for it when they come back in the springtime.
Something just ain't right when Alaska has similar temps as southern Florida.
We just got three more inches on top of what's never gonna melt...lol...at least we have January behind us now.

Yeah 41 yesterday, finally got nice mid winter heat wave, highs been up into low 30's since last weekend, going to continue for next week.
Nice change from very cold Dec and Jan; and the 40 inches of snow we got last few weeks in Jan.
