It's amazing that I can't find something online. Everything seems to have some sort of hurdle attached. Either the file won't print out without running off the page and not printing another page, or whatever. I want to build a solid body electric, and just need the body outline, x/y dimensions. Z dimensions not needed.
Any pointers?
It sounds like you’re probably trying to print out a full size picture of a finished violin or full outline. The problem is that a violin is larger than a regular sheet of printer paper, so to get a full size image you end up having to chop it and splice pages together. If you want to avoid this problem, a fairly simple solution is to buy a full size poster of a violin, like one of the many offered by The Strad magazine. That will give you full size pictures of the violin on one side and detailed line drawings and CT scans or graduation maps on the other. You can then copy the poster and cut out the outline on metal, wood, MDF, or acrylic.
If you want to draw the outline, there are several resources available that will help you to lay out a decent violin pattern using a straightedge and dividers.
If you’re building a solid-body, though, you’re not really tied to the traditional form for the violin. You can make it slimline like the NS Design violins or follow electric guitar design in the style of Mark Wood.
I think International violin sells some violin patterns as well for the aspiring maker.
