Oh yeah, cello. I was mostly thinking about how unwieldy the bigger bow might be.

I have a friend with a chin cello, so to speak, and she uses a viola bow. We call her fiddle Fidd-zilla!

I've made a couple of measurements. The Fiddlerman bow weighs 58g and it's balance point is 10.25in from where the screw meets the carbon. My old favourite, meanwhile weighs 62g and the balance point is at 9.25in.

So I'm learning a slightly different way of playing, which for me and my crisp short-notes English fiddle style seems to require more physical effort.

Gavin maybe try choking the hold point a bit. I find moving away from the frog for those kinds of bowing, closer to the balance point helps. Me, anyway. Hope you are liking the new bow.

Bow quality makes a difference!

I was thinking I wanted a different fiddle…
But first replaced my $99 music chain store bow with a used pernambuco bow ($400) from a luthier…( after trying two trays of bows) …

… and after that, I really liked the warmer mellower sound of my fiddle and decided I didn’t need to change my instrument after all!

( I tried mostly carbon bows and a few wood, but in a “blind test” i kept picking the wood bows. That’s just me, though!)

That's an interesting idea. I did wonder whether people supply heavier replacement frogs.

I'm not loving it, but it's loud, and loud can be really useful, for example when I'm leading an unamplified band of eleven, as I did last night. So I'll keep it, but it won't be my daily driver, unless your method works for me...
