Well here's an old one for me...I remember playing it two or three times a night back when I played at Elmer and Ken's Rib Eye Steak House in the mid-70s for a couple of years. My start to a musical career that went nowhere fast...lol. Anyway I always did enjoy playing this in the restaurant but really sort of forgot about it soon after those years. The other day...there it was, surfacing in the front burner of the ol' brain, so I figured that meant I gotta make/create/invent/force the time it would take to play the doggone thing before it fell back out of my brain again.....I gave the ol' neglected cheapo viola a chance to play in CGCG sawmill on this one too. To my surprise, youtube tells me it's got a copyright on it...ok...I thought it was pretty old...but youtube tells me all kinds of stuff and I don't know whether I should believe them or not...but, whatever. I'm not trying to make money, just trying my best to make some music...that alone seems near impossible enough...no way I would throw money into the mix. So enough groundhog grumbling and here she is... youtu.be/mUVJ1jOw9yU?si=tfB3EXEM-_b6jbRH

Very nice, Peggy. It doesn't surprise me at all that there's a copyright claim on this song. I was curious enough to look it up, and although this song is often thought to be old, its origins are unknown. Its not mentioned in any folk song indexes or old collections, and apparently was not known until the folk "revival" of the 1950's and 60's. It was so popular then, especially the recordings by Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary, that it would be surprising if somebody didn't want to cash in on the publishing. It might have just been for an arrangement, but I doubt YouTube takes time to sift through all that. Your viola sounds nice.

Thanks for that info and thoughts on it, Doug. I don't know for sure where I first heard it...probably among college guitar enthusiasts like myself...lol...who used to sit under the towering mimosas in the evenings and play and sing until late hours. Anyway...youtube has claimed there were copyrights on lots of stuff I've put on there...some I know for certain are way too old to have a copyright. I don't really care anymore...I would drop youtube like a hot tater if I knew people in real life...it's just my way out of this isolationist jail cell (figuratively...lol...don't worry, I haven't robbed any banks or anything) we've been stuck in where the only people around us are meth makin', drug-dealin', and just not nice folks, who never get in any real trouble for doing what they do. So...it's just the loneliness and isolation that causes me to depend on youtube to keep from going entirely nuts...which I am getting closer and closer to...lol...believe me. I don't care if they say that because in no way would I associate playing music with money. Once in the little BG band I was in for a while they were arguing over a gig...which was one playing opportunity during weeks of nowhere to play...they were arguing over pay...for us old retirees who don't know what we're doing. I'm like...hey, we can sit in this basement and practice until our hands fall off...or we can go play at this gig for free. They wouldn't do it for a lower sum than they wanted. A few experiences like that, plus the fact that I don't enjoy playing BG style, just led me to youtube from that point. Here I am stuck on youtube...lol. But I don't care...they can cut off my channel if they want...maybethen I'd start walking the streets of...wherever...the nearest town...playing guitar and singing ballads with or without copyrights...then, I probably really would end up in jail...lol...but...what'd ya do?
To me, All My Trials has a confusing turn or two in the melodic contour, which sounds more "modern" to my ear...but somehow I just always thought it was an old song possibly connected to the enslaved from our dark history. Maybe yes, maybe no.
