It’s often referred to as the Venuti technique, as Joe Venuti was the player who pioneered it. You can hear it in several numbers he recorded.
Here is the master himself (starts at 5:35):

Lawrence Welk employed some excellent violinists throughout the years, starting with Dick Kesner and his "Magic Stradivarius" Welk bought him. I don't remember the specific episode, but I'm guessing it was Joe Livoti--he often played the jazz numbers.

Seems safer to me if you wanna do fiddle tricks...just to bow through a funny tune like Turkey in the Straw with a toothpick...that won't mess up your bow. I tried it once outta curiosity, imagining there might come a day when I know real live people again and we might all feel crazy and carefree at a musical moment and I could bust out with T in the S bowing with a toothpick just to get us all laughing...well, now I'm convinced those days exist only in history...lol...but my experiment revealed that it actually is very easy to play a short bowing type song like that with an ordinary toothpick. Just in case you can't afford to take a chance on messin' up yer bow. I mean...you can pick up a free toothpick at any greasy food joint...lol. Just have the coffee and remember to avoid the food.

I forgot to add that it’s also sometimes referred to as the “Four String Joe” technique.
Here’s a video of Chuan Yun Li, a star Chinese violinist playing an encore with that technique:

Yes. It was part of a program held in Beijing some time ago. Here are a couple other encores:

Li is a tour de force kind of player with an incredible talent and panache. Add to that an impish sense of humor, and you get a performer who has the ability to keep an audience on its toes.
