I was a regular drinker and pot smoker and it didn't seem to hurt my guitar or mandolin playing. Twenty years ago, when I started fiddle in my fifties, I realized pretty quickly that smoking pot really messed with that. After a few years, rather than give up fiddle I gave up pot. No loss.
In the 60s I sometimes played guitar on LSD and thought I was really something. I realize now that was certainly untrue.
A few beers and/or some wine while jamming is fine. I metabolize alcohol especially well which I know is unusual. I respect people's choices to keep away from it.
Peggy, I think I'm glad to hear you're cutting back on caffeine. Do you stick with decaf coffee, or do you enjoy other drinks? I don't really like coffee, and prefer English style tea, but we have a lot of herbal ones I like too. I have fond memories of "Sleepytime" from my younger days, but there are plenty more. We recently discovered these, which are quite tasty: milliessippingbroth.com/
BTW, I recently thought of you when I was leafing through a little book of "Awkward Pet Photos" and came across one of a cat named "Lady Schrodinger Underfoot de Velcro."
Doug...I love that cat's name...lol. I've tried tea many times and I just can't stomach any of it...real tea...black tea and such...green tea, herbal teas...I have an allergy to mint-related stuff, which almost all herbal teas have. I have drank dandelion root tea at times with no problem, except I think it tastes awful...I used to drink sassafrass tea as a kid but now it seems to sweet to me. My problem is since the age of 3 years old I've just always loved coffee...the bitter taste...black coffee...no stuff in it. I used to finish up my mom's coffee because she always left some...then when I went to a religious college, of course preachers must learn to drink coffee all day long to perform their ministry with their community...so, since they had a big preacher program there, they had free coffee in every classroom building...coffee for a dime at the student center, where we all gathered for intense conversation and debate...they'd fill your cup for free all day after the first dime...free coffee in the folk music coffee house...free coffee in the dorm kitchens, etc., etc., etc. Can't blame college for my coffee habit...lol...but they sure had a place in the making of it. Just like hubby feels the military experience did a lot for feeding his drinking issues. RichJ got me going on decaf. Being a vet, he was telling me something about how coffee affects dogs' hearts...I once knew a preacher who had a poodle who was always drinking coffee, the poodle, I mean, well the preacher did too...but anyway...now we make a 12 cup regular fueled coffee pot for morning and several decaf pots after that. Oddly enough, I can't sleep good on decaf...lol...but I'm not gonna blame the decaf...just life itself disallows me to sleep...caffeine, on the other hand, has always made me sleepy. I used to avoid it while studying for finals because it made me too sleepy to study...lol. But i'm gonna go with RichJ's dog recommendations (my dogs don't drink coffee...lol...but just translating dog caffeine info into human and groundhog terms) and cut down on the caffeine...even if it kills me...lol.

Over a decade ago the doc said it would be good for me to cut back on somethings. Alcohol was one of them. So I just stopped drinking altogether and found it to be a great move for my spiritual health. I find I don't mind if others drink, I only mind how important they can get when they sometimes do. My playing is suffering enough with advancing age that it helps to me intentional in my living. Music is one of the great joys in life. Glad to be present for it.
I was surprised by this...
I imagined Irish sessions as very boozy events with lots of pints! But the players I know, will have one glass, or a soda. Nobody seems even slightly tipsy! A lot of us have long drives home in the dark, too, maybe that's why... my drive is 25-30 minutes but others come from even farther...if I could walk or carpool, I'd probably enjoy a glass or two...
