Seriously guys . This is D#F#F#D#
Do I imagine this or does this part sound somewhat Tool-ish? I find it does! My colleague can hear this too.
Is it bad for my fiddle to mess with different and non conventional tunings like this little experiment?
How far can you go with crosstuning?

I completely agree with Rosinhead. Seems best to keep the tunings close. I tune slowly on the fiddle...not jerk it suddenly...because you have to watch your bridge...seems to me bridges are the most fragile part of the fiddle...they can lean and they can crack and then you have to get one cut out...which, if you're not up on doing that from a blank (most of us aren't), then you've got to take it to some professional. But I agree with Rosinhead, GDGD makes more sense that AEAE, because A tunes are pretty easy to get in standard tuning, I normally feel like for my own playing...a few simple tunings work out really well...GDGD for sawmill...at times I've gone to AEAE, but don't have a great feeling about that, ADAE for some D tunes, or the Cumberland gap style...ADAD or take that one down to GCGC...then Calico either from standard or down some...plus standard itself or standard tuned down one notch. That's all I ever feel like I need to do personally. I don't like to wander to far out there. just my two cents.
Peggy , I imagine myself bringing my fiddle to my luthier because the bridge cracked lol and getting this Told you so! or See now what happened? look haha. I feel very guilty already. I am saving up for a cleaning and indeed he should have a look at the set up and my codabow also. I will have to bring fiddle and bow in the fancy case that I bought from him which was chewed up by my dog when she was still a puppy. I bet when I finally close the door after me going back home a long held deep sigh will fill his atelier.
tuning gently and slowly and not too far away from the notes in standard shouldn't really do any harm. At least I've heard experienced fiddlers say that here and in my own experience it hasn't hurt anything. I do keep an eye on my bridge and tune down and gently straighten if it does start to lean...doesn't happen often but I like to keep an eye on it and keep it straight.

This instrument has to be the most magical of all instruments ever created !
I don't remember the last time I played anything in standard.
AEae; ADae; GDgd; occasionally DDad; and rarely AEac# - and the fiddles stay in whatever tuning they were last played in. I've never had any problems.
I recently installed geared tuning pegs on one of my fiddles, and I just had a second one fitted with them. I probably won't have them put on my older fiddles (100+ yrs) - just cause. But the two I have them on now are nice fiddles that get played regularly. This will probably make them even more favored. Cross-tuning is a breeze with them.
I do like the sound of playing cross-tuned.
