I learned Root Hog over 30 years ago. In researching some background on it, I found that a lot of fiddlers play this tune in C, which is easily done as it lays just as nicely on the fingerboard as it does in G. At the time I learned it, I was learning a whole bunch of Illinois and Midwestern tunes. Perhaps it was played in G by older fiddlers (it doesn't appear in Dear Old Illinois).
I also discovered that there is a jig of the same melody in Ryan's Mammoth Collection. That tune is in A, but it's still very similar to the 4/4 tune I lay out here.
Lastly, I found a song sung by June Carter Cash called Root Hog Or Die. Same melody? You judge.
