Its the season to have fun... I was playing around this morning trying to break in a new set of strings and playing a few Christmas tunes.... I found myself playing Frosty the Snowman as a jig...that was fun... so, the challenge is to play a Christmas tune in something other than the meter it is written in... jig, strathspey, waltz.... etc... have fun

Ooh, Greensleaves (What Child is This), when I step it up, I don't know if it's a proper jig, but I like it. I'll see what I can do in the morning.

Ha! I have Deck the Halls and Joy To The World down pretty good. With double stops and all! It's good training for a newb since the melodies are very identifiable.

Merry Christmas, all!

Not related to Christmas, but many years ago we played "The 8th of January" as a waltz, at the end of a square dance evening. Sounded a bit similar to "Midnight on the Water".

OK, here's my submission. I have been thinking about an OT rendition of a solemn Christmas standard for some time. The modal nature of O Come, O Come Emanuel seemed to beg for such treatment. As some of you know I started fooling with a banjo several months ago so threw that in as well - sort of a progress report.

Hey Rich...Merry Christmas and welcome to the wonderful world of multi-track recording! Very nice! I really enjoyed hearing that...interesting take on O Come O Come Emmanuel...and I know our old mission church in Whitely Co. would have loved it this time of year! I found myself waiting for the vocal track...hmmm...ok...didn't feel like singing? Lol...seriously though it is a nice rendition and nice job getting those tracks on there and sounding nice together. Hope this is only the beginning of fun recordings to come!

Thanks Peggy. I noticed after I posted my tune no else seems to have submitted a tune on this thread. Wondering now if I should have posted in Sound Off.

I think more people might see it if it's on the soundoff forum...at least sometimes they might...lol.

Hey...here's my Christmas Fiddle Tune Challenge...except it only happened on the banjo...in double C, using that as C modal for this one. I couldn't stop them groundhogs from singin either. With a ton of interruptions from goings on all around, then an afternoon and evening of power outage to deal with...Well at least I didn't lose it, but it's sorta not really up to snuff...but they never are, so what the heck. Anyway...here she goes...

Beautiful Peggy. Never will be able to figure out how those groundhogs work in such beautiful chorus lines. Nice banjo work too.

Nice topic! Sorry Peggy but I miss your great fiddling in this piece hehe <3 But very nicely done.
Rich : you really made me think more than once what if I just would buy let's say a cheap guitar to have fun with. I might one day follow your example and experiment with different instruments ;-D

I am going to give this challenge a go too , I have found a nice christmas tune: Christmasday Ida Moarnin'... however still need to study it.

Here we go, this is recorded at once , I am just reading the notes here after I tuned back to standard tuning. And as I write this I am thinking : This sounds worse than a fiddle tune a day - this is more like a fiddle tune at first sight haha.
However , the tune is great and I found it thanks to this topic!!

I will have a look at how to enhance this basic version.

I wish you all a very nice christmas time <3

If I would only understand the difference between jig waltz scottische etcetera. I do not recognize these types. It  is still a puzzle to me how you guys juggle with these rhythms... so sorry my first attempt is just reading the notes hehe.

Anja, very nice fiddling...those Irish/Schottish tunes are not easy. I was having some coffee, just put my knitting down, looking out the window while listening to your fiddling...the clouds moved over, sun came out, and three sparkling red cardinals sat at our feeder peacefully...seemed your tune brought us into the serenity and sunlight! The music went exactly with the scene out our window.

What's going on at FHO? This thread sure hit a brick wall fast. Seems only four or five folks took interest. Surprised in didn't draw more comment or at least a few more tune submissions.

Hi Rich,

I can only speak for myself. My time has been extremely limited recently for a number of reasons - all good! I might be able to steal a moment or two to read posts or to make a comment, but I don't have the time, or quiet space, to make a short video. I hoping this will change in the near future.

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
