Hello Fiddlers! I'm doing some research for my father on a fiddle player he remembers from his youth and found this forum by way of the generous Professor Howard Marshall.
My father is in his mid-70's and originally from Missouri. I'm hoping to find any information on or music from this individual for Dad. Here's what I've been told:
-His name is Dewey Roberts.
-He has a brother named Junior who was also a fiddler but not nearly as good as Dewey.
-Dewey was good enough to have won one or more "international" fiddler competitions. I put international in quotes because I'm learning a lot of early competitions were called international or worldwide but actually weren't.
-Dewey had enough renown someone was making a movie about his life. He can't remember if it was a "movie" movie or a documentary. However, Dad remembers driving down to Florida to visit the set and seeing Dewey's parents there.
-Dad doesn't know if Dewey was originally from Missouri but he did play there often. Through my further research I'm leaning towards the fact that he wasn't from Missouri but definitely played there frequently.
-If he's still alive he'd be an older gentleman (85+)
That's all I have right now but if anyone has any questions I can pass along I certainly will.
Thanks in advance.
Update 12-18-23: After some very generous search assistance it appears Dewey was a buck dancer who lived and died in Alabama. Junior was the fiddler. My next step is to find some folks who know about buck dancing competitions to see if Dewey won anything.
If anyone has a contact in that area (Alabama Buck Dancers/Buck Dancer Competitions) I'd be more than greatful for any references.

Interesting topic.. Good old fiddlers can easily get forgotten.. I sincerely hope that someone comes up with Something to help you out.. Cheers..
If Professor Marshall didn't have an answer you might find slim pickings here, although you never know. Have you asked Charlie Walden - he's kind of the Magic Eight Ball for traditional fiddling from that area.
Thanks for the response! Charlie was the second person I asked and he unfortunately couldn't come up with anything.
Alabama was another state my father spent a good amount of time in so that's probably going to be my next step.
After that I'll be looking at Florida. It's possible the "movie being made of his life" clue may come in handy.
