For me, I have a bag of trick, licks and phrases I've worked out and developed over the years. I have a load of Key of G stuff that works well for C and F. I have G stuff that is a different scale pattern that works with G, D and A, mostly licks and phrases that use only 2 strings, so G-D, D-A and A-E. Those same tricks work in A, E and B, by using the index finger as a capo. A load of stuff that works best in D, my fav Key for fiddle tunes. That and I suppose A for fiddle tunes, A is so powerful on the fiddle, first position. You get the sonority of the notes on the A and E strings and the ballsy double stops on the G and D strings. For just plain old noodling and breaks for Bluegrass, taking this little trick and that little phrase or lick, with all the different scale patterns, it frees me up to do just about anything and make it my own.
Scale patterns, licks and phrases on the fiddle can be moved over to adjacent strings and will work in a new key. Some folks dont realize that.
