Although I was initially encouraged to become a 'close to the tip'player, I have a completely different way of handling my bow now, which developped in the last few months. When I really want to express myself, it feels best to have no restrictions at all I switch from tip to frog to middle and back and so on...I like rhythmic playing to the frog also. This way of playing has been a great relief.
I switched to this way of bowing after I bought my much easier to handle Codabow Joule (it felt natural with the codabow) and now for some reason I implement this when I need to use my wooden bow, like now because my dog chewed the hairs of my Codabow :-P
Who bows using the whole bow also? Where does it stem from? Are there any pioneers ? Is this a bowing technque or style at all?
I have experimented so much, but this way is my way I feel it.
I have def found that every fiddle player develops their own style over time and it sounds like you're there with your bowing!
I'd say I use the whole thing but my bowing is so immature so mostly it's not on purpose but some days I try to focus on it. There is just so much going on early on in the process.
What I have trouble with is (the twist, or turn) that you do when using the upper part. I sound better when leaving the whole bow down but slowly, it starts screeching.
Yeah! I do my best to use the whole bow, as well. Not only do the various parts of the bow produce distinctive tones, when you get to the skill level where you get good tone over the entire length you are able to create wonderfully long notes and phrases. It's all part of what makes string instruments so special.

It makes embellishments easier this way,they slip in, like in the example here.
I do recall that you had classical lessons, did you leave before the instructor could teach the 'Broad Detache', (whole bow stroke).
It is very beneficial for the bow mechanics to practice the whole bow stroke in a few different ways.
May I suggest you revise your bow hold, especially the aspect of making a bridge between the index and pinky fingers.
Spread the bridge a little more so the pinky can counter act the bow weight at the frog.
Is that a CF fiddle, I like the sound, whats the brand name.
