NCnotes - Hahaha - I knew about Brenda Stubbert because she's on a great CD of Cape Breton music recorded at Cork University and released on Nimbus. Its part of a set that also includes one of music from the Irish diaspora, and a couple others. When I Googled her to check the spelling it came up on the first page. Highly recommended. Here's a track including her: youtu.be/6aw1shI2HkA?feature=shared I've played "Duke of Fife's Welcome to Deeside" for many years.
Eric - I don't really play "Spotted Pony," and on that track, recorded 30 or more years sgo, I was just following Will. I just got curious, and found there are several tunes with that name. Hope that's the one your teacher taught you.

Here's another one from that CD, if you prefer jigs: youtu.be/6mb3CQra6jI?feature=shared
I play "Tea Gardens," composed by Angus Chisholm, too.
Here's the 4 CD set, at a very reasonable price. Some top players there: amazon.com/Distant-Shore-Irish...00000JMDF
Welp Doug...I tried to record over that and boy, that's hopping for me. I'm good for about half but what a way to practice. I'll get it.
My stinking E string is a squeaker and I just can't cross strings that fast yet.....YET! I played it for my wife before I tried and she said "are you going to be able to keep up??" lol....she knows..lol. She suffered through that tune all weekend at camp...Thanks again
Yea I been there Erockin!
Sounds like they are just cruisin’ along, and then when you join in, you realize they are playing 110bpm, ha! On YouTube I use the gear to play at 75% at first…or even 50% if not too distorted…and there are some “slow down” apps out there too! Once you get the tune in fingers though, you might find that you can keep up ( I usually can match speed eventually, may take few weeks though!). If I am confused about some bit of bowing or fingering though, I play as slowwww as I need to go, like, comically slow. Ironically this sets up the conditions for effortless playing of that part later…our brains just need time/space to learn and absorb the new stuff…
Gonna check out the links, thanks Doug! :-)
Swing, that sounds like a really pretty tune!

I looked up some other versions that I could play with but my goal is to hit that version Doug provided. You're right...a couple weeks and it'll be closer.

Originally posted by DougDEric, can't you just slow it down a bit to learn it, and then gradually speed it back up? Most recording programs can do that now. Its somewhere around 115 - 120 Bpm - brisk but not breakneck.
I would also advise not to annoy your wife if possible.
I've got it down, note for note. Only song that I have down to the specs....lol...maybe at 90bpm so at this point it's just reps that will get me there!!!

Believe me when I say, those folks are some of the kindest and most down to earth folks you could ever hope to meet. I was fortunate to meet them, play with them, and sup with them on a few occasions, What grand folks they are - so talented and so humble. Such fun to be with......
They were very popular in Alaska - while we were there (probably still are). I miss being there for folks and occasions like that...
Getting back to I'm finally getting back to a place like that though. I got to "jam" eith Time Crouch this weekend. Just 4 of us. WHAT A TREAT!!! Hope that happens again! Mtn View AR is becoming our home away from home.

They are my favorite of string bands. All the incarnations. Second in that genre would be High Woods...
Since yesterday practising this Old Cottonfields version:

Great video love this way of playing.
Crosstuning ftw!
Ooo I like that one! :-) Putting it on my list.
My reel of the week is "Green Fields of America".
Also, a jig called "Whelan's", and I discovered this band I really like called Barde playing it: https://youtu.be/F6jxoSGxIw0
Last week after the park session, a little boy and his dad came over and his dad said, "He is so excited that you are playing music from Bluey!" We were like, "Thanks!" (?)
But when I got home and out of curiosity looked up Bluey, it listed "John Ryan's Polka" as one of the musical pieces on Bluey and that was literally one of the last tunes we played! That boy has sharp musical memory...future musician haha.
