Finally learned the Tamlin!!!
(Prodded by banjo and mando players)

also prodded into learning the Congress Reel ( 3 weeks of people asking if I knew it, then I finally looked it up and learned it)

My tune learning seems to have fallen under the control of the people I play with … LOL

I'm just trying to play some Irish tunes. I'm struggling with it. I keep hoping if I play a little bit every day, play it slowly so I can get it to sound somewhat decent, maybe I'll be able to play it fast. But it's not working because a) I've never been able to play anything fast, and b) when I play with people who play fast I can only play like every first and third note of a jig, for example.

Spent some time with a friend visiting and playing some easy-going tunes and airs on fiddle and mtn dulcimer. These included:

Da slockit light
Rosin the Bow
The Rose by the Door (waltz)
Gardebylaten (Swedish walking tune)
Leaving Lismore
Josefin's Waltz

These also gave me an opportunity to continue test-driving my new JonPaul CF bow.

But I have some other tunes that I am actively working on - focusing on technique, including bowing and intonation. I mentioned some of these in a previous post.
Wait till You Hear This One, Boys
Big John McNeil
President Garfield's Hornpipe

Paddy on the Turnpike
Frog on the Lillypad
Arkansas Traveler

Y'know, I may not be Mark O'Connor, or some such, but where I sit and play is arm's length away from the recorder, so I started to "roll tape" as a habit, just in case.

Working on two reels from Tommy People's book. Lady Gordon's and Maudabawn Chapel. Had carpal tunnel surgery on the left hand 3 weeks ago, just getting back into playing.

Best wishes for a swift recovery, Bailey!

I had “cubital tunnel” issues for a few months…I was scared of needing the surgery (scared enough to entirely change lifestyle and go to PT, then it gradually faded away…but it’s always lurking. )

I am working on Tennessee Waltz....not the double stops yet or vibrato but...within my lesson, I was able to get the melody down and locked in. Pretty excited to get this one down. A beautiful song.

I agree with you Eric. Tennessee Waltz is a pretty tune. I love Waltzes. Shenandoa is one of my favorites. Most people think it is a song about the Shenandoah River. It is about a Canadian fur trapper and an Indian maiden. I love it. Don't worry too much about the double stops. They will come when you are ready. I have so much arthritis in my hand now that I had to go back to mostly playing single notes. Just throwing in an occasional double stop here and there. I still like the sound of it. At this point in my life, I am just glad I can still play some. Ky. Waltz is another good one.

Thanks for the encouragement, Cowboy!

I will look up at Shenandoa! KY Waltz will be the next one! It's always exciting to add a new tune to the collection.

This week is review week... over the last few weeks I have spent time learning new tunes and have neglected many others.... usually I start with difficult waltzes and migrate over to somewhat difficult tunes like Black and White Rag, Tune for Andy with double stops, CNE Breakdown....

Fiddlehed videos is a good place to learn these tunes. Fiddlehed is not a misspell. thats the way it is spelled.

Was working on a nice tune called "Waynesboro" I got from Chance McCoy, and one called "Old Sport" from a Texas Shorty album.

Yesterday, I tracked the instruments, not realizing what song it was.

Try MTB Fire On the Mountain, too--outstanding crowd recognition--I love minor chords

Regarding initial post, worked on Eastbound and Down (Smoky and the Bandit, Jerry Reed), and Thunder and Lightening (Lonesome River Band)

I realize these aren't tunes, they are songs, but I like to sing.

One tune worked on to plus up is Arkansas Traveler--after everybody goes around in Dmaj, we change to Bminor and play the thing in a modal shift.  Then go back to original Dmaj.  Makes it sound Scottish/Irish.  Similar treatment as Blackberry Blossom.

I'm working on "Whiteface" so I can post my fiddle progress but man, recording a 2 min fiddle song is impossible right now.

Lately, fiddling and singing together. This isn't something new for me, I've just felt like doing it. Things like "Foreign Lander," Cabbage Head," "One Morning In May."

Barlow Knife in GDAE after admiring the way Molsky handles that tune, but still trying not to play an exact duplicate of it. As if I could!

I've been re-learning "Trudeau's Reel" and getting it up to speed. I knew this tune 40 years ago but forgot it somewhere along the line.

Well yup, remembering something for 40 years is kind of tough!

While reading these posts, playing Flatwater Fran (waltz by Phil Cunningham).

Working on "A Gaggle of Geese" by Bill Guest. I recently purchased his book of tunes, "Original Old-Time Canadian Fiddle Tunes". There are 33 tunes in the book with a CD with Bill playing the tunes. I like to be able to actually hear how the tune is supposed to be played. I have a tendency to butcher tunes by just reading the dots!

Today I'm trying to play Rattletrap. I drew a picture of how I imagine the tune in my mind.
