I'm just trying to play some Irish tunes. I'm struggling with it. I keep hoping if I play a little bit every day, play it slowly so I can get it to sound somewhat decent, maybe I'll be able to play it fast. But it's not working because a) I've never been able to play anything fast, and b) when I play with people who play fast I can only play like every first and third note of a jig, for example.
Spent some time with a friend visiting and playing some easy-going tunes and airs on fiddle and mtn dulcimer. These included:
Da slockit light
Rosin the Bow
The Rose by the Door (waltz)
Gardebylaten (Swedish walking tune)
Leaving Lismore
Josefin's Waltz
These also gave me an opportunity to continue test-driving my new JonPaul CF bow.
But I have some other tunes that I am actively working on - focusing on technique, including bowing and intonation. I mentioned some of these in a previous post.
Wait till You Hear This One, Boys
Big John McNeil
President Garfield's Hornpipe

I agree with you Eric. Tennessee Waltz is a pretty tune. I love Waltzes. Shenandoa is one of my favorites. Most people think it is a song about the Shenandoah River. It is about a Canadian fur trapper and an Indian maiden. I love it. Don't worry too much about the double stops. They will come when you are ready. I have so much arthritis in my hand now that I had to go back to mostly playing single notes. Just throwing in an occasional double stop here and there. I still like the sound of it. At this point in my life, I am just glad I can still play some. Ky. Waltz is another good one.

Thanks for the encouragement, Cowboy!
I will look up at Shenandoa! KY Waltz will be the next one! It's always exciting to add a new tune to the collection.

Fiddlehed videos is a good place to learn these tunes. Fiddlehed is not a misspell. thats the way it is spelled.
Oh I'm a fan of his for sure. Not only for the content but his overall vibe I can jive with!
Marshall Tucker Band, Can't You See
Yesterday, I tracked the instruments, not realizing what song it was.

Try MTB Fire On the Mountain, too--outstanding crowd recognition--I love minor chords
Regarding initial post, worked on Eastbound and Down (Smoky and the Bandit, Jerry Reed), and Thunder and Lightening (Lonesome River Band)
I realize these aren't tunes, they are songs, but I like to sing.
One tune worked on to plus up is Arkansas Traveler--after everybody goes around in Dmaj, we change to Bminor and play the thing in a modal shift. Then go back to original Dmaj. Makes it sound Scottish/Irish. Similar treatment as Blackberry Blossom.
Working on "A Gaggle of Geese" by Bill Guest. I recently purchased his book of tunes, "Original Old-Time Canadian Fiddle Tunes". There are 33 tunes in the book with a CD with Bill playing the tunes. I like to be able to actually hear how the tune is supposed to be played. I have a tendency to butcher tunes by just reading the dots!
