Hey everybody!

I am thinking about getting a new fiddle in the next year and have just started perusing around to see what’s out there. I’ve never been a gear head about instruments, nor do I know much about many makers.

I am going to be looking in the $6k-$12k range and noticed some Silakowski fiddles pop up. The thing is, everyone wants the 5-string Silakowski’s and it seems to be impossible to find any info on his 4-string instruments. I’ve seen a few online that were already sold.

I was wondering if anyone on here knows where I could find some 4-string Silakowski’s to look at. Or maybe he just didn’t make many of those?

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Given your proximity to the DC area, I would strongly encourage you to do some looking at the shops and with luthiers who have violins available. This area is extremely rich with excellent violins in your price range, both modern and old. You're just a short trip away!

I have a Silakowski 4 string that John made. This is one of his scratch made fiddle not the re-graduated ones he bought in the white. Reported as a very good fiddle by good players who have tried it. I took it to John for a setup a few years ago. I like it but have other good fiddles and have been considering selling the Silakowski. I have a "trigger finger" on my left ring and it is not fun to play. I have no interest in traveling or shipping to sell the fiddle.

It looks like you may have a chance for a fiddle by the maker you’re interested in. In that case, best wishes for a good match.

If you end up still looking, you might also get in touch with Jeremy Yoder. He’s a very skilled luthier who lives right in Winchester.

I have a Silakowski revoiced 4 string that I was hoping to trade for a good mandolin or other instruments. The revoiced are fiddles that Silakowski bought new in the white and he graduated them, finished them, etc… I’ve got a video also of Ashokens but I can’t get it to load here. You should be able to find it on Facebook Marketplace. If your interested, let me know and maybe we can work something out.
