I took this picture on a train outside of Paris in September. I have heard of these violins. It sounded somewhat tinny and thin but did the job.

That's a Stroh violin, invented and manufactured in England in the early 20th century (originally). I think you're right about the sound. There was a recent thread about them here at the FHO.

I play one modern Replica, it is very unconfortable to hold but makes a pretty noise!
The late Bill Dillof had one these and I was lucky enough to get to play it a few times. I think it's called a Stroh Viol, IIRC. He had some vintage photos from the Stroh catalog of the whole range of instruments (violin, viola, cello, and bass) all gathered around a giant horned recording gramophone back in the twenties. Quite the novelty.
