Hey Fiddlers, I'm looking for an mp3 of Luther Davis playing Lily of the Valley. Any leads or help you can give me would be appreciated! Thanks

Also ...

Have always really enjoyed this tune.  An especially good version is played by the Old Time group Boojum (Nokosee Fields is the fiddler, (3) BOOJUM- "LILY OF THE VALLEY" - YouTube ).

Thanks hayesdt! This is great: Luther Davis playing Lily of the Valley solo for a bit before some conversation with Andy Cahan. I bet this is from the Alice Gerrard collection at the UNC Southern Folk Collection. Hundreds of hours of field recordings.

Do either of you know where this tune comes from? There's a well known 19th century Salvation Army hymn by that name, but this doesn't sound like that one.

I like the Luther Davis version. Sounds like old time fiddling. The youtube video... they changed the melody and bowing so much that it seems a different tune... and type of music. These dang kids these days sure like that boring old repetitive shuffle. grumble grumble old man

Luther learned much of his repertoire from Emmett Lundy iirc, he plays many of the same tunes.

Now, I'm a bit in the same camp as fiddlenerd, prefer the individuality of the playing of the old dead guys, but I don't particularly dislike the Boojum video, it's alright. Doesn't seem overly shuffle-y until it gets a little ways in and seems to speed up a little.
Either way, it's a good tune and I think I'll have to learn it.
