I recently got a viola (but still rely on the fiddle!) and wonder how people are adapting it's C Clef to playing with other old time players - I'm getting around tunes in G or C but struggling with D and A where a lot of old time tunes live. Ideas?
Nice sound on Westphalia - but I'd need to play it in G to get my group to play it with me!
Oh gosh...hope you enjoy your new viola...but, if you wanted to play Westphalia Waltz in G, you'd have to move down a string with the whole thing as if playing it in D on the fiddle...then do some pretty big sliding on the A part...3rd position with pinky, which I think would be pretty awkward to get...then on the B part I would just drop it down an octave for that part...and I think there might be a few awkward things in that too...would be tough. Might be easier if you could find a guitar player who felt like playing it in C for you on the viola. Anyway...other tunes might work out much easier to go to the fiddle keys on. Good luck with it. Hope you do enjoy your viola...they are fun to play.
