As many of you know by now, I like all the music the world has to offer. I listened to a great podcast yesterday with Bryan Sutton that reminded me why I listen to music the way that I do. So I'd like to share some more Mack. I'd love to know how long you could take this song in...

A bit confused since the vid seems to imply the group is playing an "original" tune which turned out to be Cherokee Shuffle, certainly not their own. That said the fiddle/banjo combo work well in a mostly creative interpretation of an OT tune. Well Cherokee Shuffle gets a lot of BG play these days so I guess both genres could claim it. I personally don't mind listening to stuff like this. Some may see it as a travesty.
I am also a fan of cinemaphotography so I appreciate when some videos are recorded with artistic intent.
Leftys (No Offense) always throw me off...lol. RichJ I hear ya...Glad ya checked it out.
When I hear any fiddle that's tasty, I dig in. No matter where, style, position, who, what, who wrote what, however it was written, stolen, copied, you get it...I'll listen and absorb what I can! Tonight is my bluegrass jam without the best instrument in bluegrass and that's a fiddle...
Ahhh... it looks like he got his bow re-haired.
I do appreciate your excitement for his music and desire to share it. It made me go back and watch a few videos that I found a long time ago that inspired me - enough that I also shared them here on FHO. And... well, upon further reflection - I can say that my appreciation for Mack's music has grown. Thanks for sharing.
I can remember how excited I was when I found Shesham and Lotus. And then later they added "and Son" / a tuba player. Whaa???
yeap... old time fiddle tunes, and songs, but with a special flare. A bit unconventional, and certainly entertaining. Insanely skilled and talented. They play with reckless abandon, but they never crash. At one time - I wanted to hunt them down and see them perform live. But, they are from Canada!
Every once and a while - I have to go to YouTube and get a dose of their medicine. It's good for me.
Oh yeah - Lee - there are videos of them busking.
Speaking of busking - ...and then there is "Tuba Skinny". goodness - certainly a New Orleans "gem" - for sure.
I know these are not exactly the same - but... if we are talking about appreciating musical talent - there is a lot out there to be admired.
I said this in your other post:
It's just not the style of playing I want to learn in Old Time fiddle tunes. Why? ...just my personal taste. And I do enjoy watching folks that can "rip one off" like that ...but I don't go looking for it.
Let me make a slight clarification. "I don't go looking for it" - as source material to use for new tunes to learn. And that has more to do with my own limitations than anything else. I can't do that. So, I don't bother.
But Steve Jones' recent quote from John Hartford is encouraging: "...style is built upon limitations." So, I can hope for doing something stylish, but it won't be any of the above.
why are all my posts turning into novels? (channeling pogo I guess)
