Last night at a small jam, I noticed one of the participants quickly finding chords for suggested tunes on his phone. I was surprised when he explained that he was using Strum Machine, and the chords were in Strum Machine’s nice big blocks easily read on a single screen. I have occasionally practiced to Strum Machine, but have typically used Ultimate Guitar (or ForScore or printed books) most of the time when I wanted to find chords.

For fiddle tunes, Strum Machine can be a wonderful and rich library even if you don’t use the backing capability but just need to see the chords for a new tune! Of course, the ease of editing a Strum Machine tune is also a big plus. This group plays a G instead of a C on this measure? Hey, easy to change for practice at home or for the next time that person calls out that tune.

(Lol, sorry if this is too obvious to everybody else, but it was a fun “duh” moment for me, when I found a tool I already had could be used in a different and very helpful way.)

I don't have strum machine but from stuff I've heard it sounds like a great tool for a fiddler to have on hand.

Your post prompted me to look into this. I gotta say, it's pretty fine. It's geared to our kind of music. It would also be good on a tablet for a teaching tool of sorts.
Sounds odd but I have to think about the buck-a-week thing. The subscription format instead of a flat fee, is great for the app owner. I wish them well. With gas prices, I'm bleeding money just going to a weekly jam.

Actually there is a flat fee, the annual fee minus 18% if you pay up front $40.18

Consider if you’ll really use it. If so, it’s worth it IMO.

Seems like it could be a handy tool in a quick jam situation where there is more than one guitar player. But "the chords" Strum Machine uses might not be to everyone's tastes. Part of the fun of playing guitar to fiddle tunes is all of the modal possibilities.

Strum Machine is evolving with modal chords, inversions, and different style strumming patterns all promised to come soon. Some of that is showing up on the beta version. Not to replace a real guitar if you have one. I've had trouble around here finding a guitar player who understands fiddle tunes. I am playing with one now who is into learning and we play together with the Strum Machine going. It helps keep the timing steady as he gets up to speed with the chords. We lower the guitar volume and keep the bass and mandolin up.

Very easy to enter your own version of a tune or edit existing tunes. Want a g chord in that A tune? Quick and easy.
