As of Tuesday night, the night before the actual festival begins, the gate said they are down by about 40% of attendees.. It showed.. Still plenty of jams and activity, but also still plenty of open parking spaces.. Prices were all higher.
My favorite thing about this year's Clifftop is that I got to jam DAILY with Hangout member GAPBOB.. He is a powerful fiddler.. He gave me a bow lesson and I gave him a Clawhammer banjo lesson..Fun guy to jam with.
Also I met a family of four kids, all under 17, who all fiddle with proficiency.. we all had SO much fun together. Words can't describe the experiences so you'll have to take my word for it..

ALSO, one evening a stated Hangout member stuck his head under the canopy and asked if I was Tuneweaver from the hangout... I was busy and he left before I could inquire who he was and chat with him..SO, if YOU are that guy, please PM me.. I hope I didn't seem to be giving you a cold shoulder..

Thanks for the update on Clifftop adventures, Lee. Sounds like fun. I guess covid messed everything up to where attendance for such things will suffer for a while longer, but happy to hear that at least it's still going. Have a good time.

Do you mean "2022 recap?" You can still edit your title.
Interesting about the drop in attendance. I wonder if it will ever reach previous levels. As the participants age, some may just feel its no longer worth the effort. It will be interesting to see if the most recent old time "boom" is mostly one broad generation, or if it will be carried on.

I hate to think the baby boomers will take all the good old time stuff to the grave with them (us).

What's left? Mick Jagger is 79!
My point is, if you're a rocker you feel the same way.
Even what passes for country now, sounds like hip-hop to me.

It was great, despite the rain, attendance picked up and had lots of good times jamming with Lee and Katie and the rest of their entourage, kept wxpanding through the week.

Lee’s a child musician magnet, they find him where ever he is.

Came with no banjos and left with three banjos! Long story, which i will tell later!

Also did daily sacred harp singing. The worst part of the trip was finding out on the drive home that Ted Mercer, a wonderful man who composed, promoted, and sang shape note music has died. Such a devastating loss.

Regarding the three banjos, two belong to Eric, a young man who bought a new banjo and had no room for his gear, so we are carting it home.

Emphasis on the “young”, you old codgers!

BOB, you may have missed one kid jam that just showed out of the blue.. Remember the three girls about 10 years old who spent the day hauling Ice for sale to campers? Well ALL three  of them came to a kid jam with instruments..One played base and two played fiddles..So that jam has SIX kids, Harry Hare, and Five adults.   Very memorable..  A kid jam earlier in the week had a 8  year old boy who flat picked his guitar next to his phenomenal banjo playing sister and another fiddling sister..Add them to the two girls who had already been stopping buy off and on all week..Pretty special......ALL of it.

I had given Harry Hare to the 10 and 12 year old sisters so they could try some busking with him. The 12 year old was a natural performer/'ham' sort of like me but better... Anyway, on another day, when the kids were in the busking area, someone said to them, "Where is that rabbit? Looks like he is missing.".. He was referring to having seen them busking but the girls misunderstood and thought that he was implying that Harry Hare had been STOLEN!!! They ran to get their mother and the three of them rushed to our compound, worried that Harry was gone...I assured them that he was just in the tent stuffing his face with carrots..
BTW the mother is having me make a puppet like Harry for the girls..They start a 'head' hunt tomorrow and I'll start a 'body' shop on that same day. Hope to have the puppet in the mail before the leaf turning season.

Speculating about the lower attendance numbers...: Higher entrance/camping fees, higher gas prices, higher cafeteria prices, covid fears. Who knows. It did seem to still be a good mix of ages attending, just fewer of all. The only thing I saw that seemed to be increased was the number of Banjo vendors!! Really. I think that there were six. Also, the number of dogs was seemed to be increased. Cute dogs, all on leashes.

That was me.  I was camped on your immediate left (from the road).  I meant to get over there and learn something from y'all, but there were just so many places to be!  We talked a bit Fri night/Sat morning (can't remember already), but I guess you didn't recognize me without my hat.  Anyhow, we made a pickin' appointment for next year and I intend to keep it!

From the folks I've heard from who didn't go, covid was the biggest factor. Not surprising, really. Of the six people in my uke band, 3 of 6 have had it in the last 30 days and one in another band has too.
I'm scheduled to play 4 gigs at the Iowa State Fair starting Friday. Looks like I'll be wearing a mask.

Sounds like Clifftop was a smaller more intimate affair. Bob, I'm sorry I missed you.

Wise choice.. to wear a mask.. For us at Clifftop, we only went indoors One time for breakfast and there was only one other diner around.. Felt pretty safe....(we shall see)..the only person who I saw wear a mask was (I THINK HIS NAME WAS ) David Bass of the Freight Hoppers...Hey, he had a mask on so I'm not 100% sure but I'm 99%sure .

Billy, we got along without you but your absence was felt, believe me..!

There was a smaller group over at Babcock, we played tunes everyday and each night. Did not have campsites for the whole week so we left. My wife went over to see Rachel Eddy and some other friends one day when I was busy doing some instrument work etc and having fun playing tunes with folks who just showed up. More than anything else, it was Covid that kept us old timers away. That and there are far more creature comforts at Babcock with the campsites. As @DougD said, it does get to be more effort each year. Years ago JP and other older folks would stay off and come in everyday. That seems to be the way we are headed after Covid, the lord willing the creek don't rise type thing.

Just a comment about an odd observation.. We bought a few bags of ice over the weekend at Clifftop. It didn't seem to last very long...just melted quickly. The temperature wasn't all that high. So I determined that the ice was indeed at 32 when we bought it but not much lower. Had the ice been stored at say, ZERO, it would have lasted a lot longer.. Next year I'm bringing my own refrigerator with an ice maker! Just sayin'.smiley

Hey, thank you again for the fiddle and the banjo lesson! It was great to meet you. (I am the guy who showed up with a cigar box I was trying to pass off as a fiddle).
