Yesterday I subscribed to a few facebook groups where musicians search for musicians. Now one guy named 'streetmusician' was playing harmonica, he is looking for other musicians and posted something like : Since I cannot find musicians I'm posting myself playing the harmonica. I sent him a private message, this man travels around in his mobilhome... he regularly visits my area and we are now discussing it: fiddle matches harpoon... I see a chance to meet him tomorrow !
He gave me his playlist , I know some of his tunes, and now he is even mentioning we should drink one at one pub outside and begin to play together.
What kind of weird magic is this?!

I also told him about you guys and the advice I got to search for my peer group .
I didn't find a whole group, but a loner like me.
And we are making plans now!

Are we crazy?

In this land we are, I swear ;)

Hope everything goes well. If there are harpoons involved though, you might want to take your dog!

Well for some reason he called his harmonica his harp. It was me who came up with "Aha, harp= harpoon? " referring to the the line from the Janis Joplin song Me And Bobby McGee.

I read online about this song line: "The more sanitized version considers the "Harpoon" as a slang word for harmonica."

Well lol.

Now serious. Taking the dog with me is dangerous for others. I can't bring her on the terrace of that pub, even with a muzzle she would scare the hell out of people. On walks she is able to ignore everyone but this would be too much for her.

Over here harmonicas are sometimes referred to as a "mouth organ" or "mouth harp," or just "harp," but not "harpoon" that I've ever heard. I'm not really that familiar with "Me and Bobby McGee," but I see that term is in there.
I understand about your dog - I was just teasing you.

That is quite interesting, as I already read that many years ago online, that the word harpoon from the line "I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana and I was playing softly while Bobby sang the blues..." meant slang for harmonica.

That's already one person saying: never heard of that.

I see it in some online lists of slang terms (along with many others) but I've just never heard it. I thought maybe it was a translation quirk.

Yeah it's Harp not Harpoon. Maybe Harpoon just fitted the song better....?

I found THIS: People also ask
Is a harmonica also called a harpoon?
The "harpoon" is slang for harmonica. It was a harmonica being played while Bobby sang. Barry from New York, NcYou can see a live version of this by Kris Kristofferson in the film MESSAGE TO LOVE, which is about the Isle of Wight Fesival in August 1970.

Hope it’s a great meeting of the musicians. Have fun.

When I played a few nights per week at the local steakhouse, I started each night singing me and Bobby McGee…not that it’s really my kinda music exactly, but it just warmed me up and got me in the mood to get going…anyway, I remember singing the line…I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana, etc. I just knew it meant mouth harp but that’s the only place I ever heard it called that.

I'm glad that's cleared up. I was afraid you might be planning a meeting with Queequeg or somebody!

Do I hear some concern ;-)

I am sure planning a meeting with someone passionate about music. He was a bagpipes instructor once and sent me pics of himself playing bagpipes, with a purple coloured Arafat scarf around his head and wearing army trousers. This was my instrument of choice as a kid, but this I couldn't learn at the musical academy where all kids were sent to, so as a kid I also picked up the harp and learned myself a few tunes. He explained me about harmonica playing , the techniques involved, and I wished I knew that as a kid.

He calls himself a nomad and actually lives in a large mobilhome/van.

As far as my knowledge of people goes, this guy can be trusted. He posts freely on facebook in musicians' groups and makes no secret of the places where he parks his mobilhome (he told others also where he is playing),  gave me his number plate and the place where he will stay for a couple of days.

Good luck! All it takes is one other player that’s on the same page and you’ve got something special.

If you have any concerns about security, given that you don’t know the other person yet, you could suggest a meeting place that’s in a public place and has plenty of people nearby.

yes, by all means make sure everything is cool and you are in a safe situation...although I'm guessin' that in Belgium life is just safer than it would be for us here in the U.S., where everybody's flatout nuts and they all carry guns...lol. Hope you do have fun and enjoy each other's company and music.

...and, speaking of pulling that harpoon outta the dirty red bandana...I couldn't resist...had to play this one...it's really been decades, probably over 40 years since I've played this or even thought about it. I'm not linking on the sound off forum because there's no fiddle...just tried to play it mainly on guitar and trying to use same sort of licks I used back in the old days when I warmed up before getting to play the old ky murder ballads and such for the eveing...this one always warmed up both my guitar playing and my singing... sorry about my terrible "harpoon" attempts...I am so bad at playing that harmonica...but I keep trying...had to put it in there ya know...since the song is singing about it...

I just had the guts to post myself while playing along with Stam Willum from freefiddlelessons.com in an advertisement in a group where musicians search for other musicians. I just must find another fiddler over here, taht would be so cool, playing meldoy and harmony together. And then maybe someone with a banjo or guitar or who knows what might happen.
Goal: meet from time to time to play some music.
Genre: folk/ old time everything that comes close to this.

Oh gosh, Anja...it's so hard to find jamming pals...I hope you can find some. I've searched and I can tell you I understand the frustrations. Maybe you can get your guts back and get back into the search circles.
