I think we've discovered a new type of cat food to put on the market: Toasty Fiddle Tunes! He got us a good one for May! And thanks to you and Amy for grabbing it away before he gulped it down. Tell him it's ok with me if he eats up anything in C before we get a chance to play it...lol. Great tune though...I'm gonna play a fresh one soon, but for now I'll just link one I've done before to get started...that's sort of like using an old term paper from a previous class to get through the next class...lol...so I promise I'll play another one soon! Thanks for a good tune, Maxie...a thumbs up and heart-felt Meow to this one!

Here's one for viola from Jan 2020...I'll get to workin' on a new one soon. Come on, guys...let's have some fun eatin' up a good ol' tune with Maxie!

I'm gettin' out ahead of the game on this...cheatin' I guess because I'm finding old ones I had done on youtube previously...wasted all my playin' time for a few days the other day but I'll go ahead and cheat...here's one I did in 2017... I hope I can play it better than how I was playin' it then...lol...

Gonna have a look at our Old Time Jam version and see if I can play it better in a few days...ok guys...don't let me get ahead on this. I mean, even though I am cheatin', since I'm linkin', but not playin'...lol. Gonna do it again soon though. Great tune. I think it was Dwight Diller who showed me this tune several years...or decades i guess...at least it wasn't several centuries ago...not yet.

Gotta link my favorite musician alive today, Dwight Diller, with OMFlannagan...Dwight on fiddle...

Dwight on Banjo.... youtu.be/1d8IySI-Rxk

I'm not big on travel more than maybe 20 miles from home, but I did drag myself (plus my daughter) to the Vandalia Gathering in W V one year, about 2004 or sometime around there...and ended up at a fiddle jam led by John Morris, of Clay Co, WV, Dwight's buddy...and I gotta tell you that was the absolute best Old Mother Flannagan at that jam that I've ever heard done on the fiddle in my life...and I'm really sorry there seems to be nothing on youtube...John Morris is hard to hear outside of a small handful of youtubes and a trip to WV. There ya go...now you have to go around not knowing what he sounded like on Old Mother Flannagan, and trying to come up with a good one of YER own to boot! Come on, now...we will play it right!

I guess John hasn't strayed too far from home much. However, he and David came to the 1975 Brandywine Mountain Music Convention, which featured the music of West Virginia. There's quite a bit of their playng and singng at that event on the Slippery Hill site along with some of their mentors, but not this tune.
Lee Triplett's version, which is where the Fuzzy Mountain string band got it, is in the M-K collection and also on Slippery Hill in the West Virginia music section, along with one from Wilson Douglas, which is quite different. They both just called it "Mother Flanagan," without the "Old."

The Fuzzy's moved it to cross A. I once stopped Lee Triplett on the streets of Glenville and asked him to play it for me; he played in G, standard tuning.

Thanks Carl. Yeah, I wonder why they did that - a little late to ask now I guess. I play it like Kenny Hall and the Sweets Mill band - I guess it sort of compresses two parts from Lee Triplett's tune into one, making it AABB. Don't remember where I actually learned it though - that was a long time ago.

This tune gets played quite a bit by fiddlers here in New England, but mostly with a Celtic rather than OT flavor. I learned it in G but see that it is also played a lot in A as featured on the Old Time Jam site. To me there's an advantage of playing it in G because in that key you can throw in a nice F# - G slide that work well in both the A and B parts.

That's interesting, Rich. I always thought Flannagan, the name, I mean, sounds so Irish...always wondered if it's another one of the multitude of OT fiddle tunes that was once Irish until we got a hold of it over here on this side of the pond...lol.

Peggy, this tune is related somehow to "The Green Fields of America," which I think is Irish, and is in "Ryan's Mammoth Collection" (1880's Massachusetts). Its also in "O'Neill's Music of Ireland," subtitled "Charming Mollie Brallaghan." Its in G.
To me, the descending thirds starting on C in one part suggests it should be in G.

This is so reminiscent of so many Irish/Scottish tunes that i'm getting mixed up again. Only way i can depart from those tunes would be to throw some blue notes into the mix. And maybe some double stops/drones.

Think i'll go for A Ionian/A Major as the Home mode/Key. And maybe wander either side of that, on the circle of 5ths/4ths, or closely related modes. And see what comes out....

When I posted the VFF pick for this month I spelled the name with 2 Ns. This I noticed the tune seems to only use one N and changed the spelling. One N or two, I agree with you Flannnagen sure sounds like an Irish name.

The Flanagan Brothers were famous Irish - American musicians in the 1920's and 30's: youtu.be/n_LeiOf1Vsg
Their name is conveniently spelled out on the neck of the guitar!

Agreed Peggy, Just had a listen to Dwight Diller and David Nemec  playing OMF. Seems to be something about it the other versions i've heard haven't got.

Well chalk up one point for Groundhogpeggy for effort...I made a recording of Old Mother Flannagan this afternoon but, believe me, it was so bad I really cannot share it...lol. My playing has been pretty bad for the past several months...too much craziness happening around me and I just can't focus at all...I'll get back to it later, and hopefully get a recording I'm not totally too grossed out about to share...lol. Well I tried to be first...didn't happen, not yet anyway. So...come one...who's REALLY on first????

I'll just say it's sorta like my past, I mean my life experience and thought process, from when I was itty bitty to where I am today at 68, was sort of ripped out from under me...sounds crazy, but I feel like my life to this point has been stolen away from me...and I'm stuck dangling in nowhere and starting out again from this strange point in time, with raw emotion...and confusion. How does that sound???? Lol...it's my only excuse...yes, I've gone nuts I guess, but having a tough time since my dad passed away back in September...can't seem to get it together. Always having been the black sheep, I was unexpectedly and suddenly disinherited and booted out of the remaining family...and I just wasn't ready for that, even though I should have seen it coming. All shaken up. Anyway...gonna try to get back to that Old Mother Flannagan and see if I can get something better...excuses don't work, do they? I'll try again soon...hopefully one of these days I'll get my head on straight, or at least as straight as it ever was. I'll get it together one of these days...and Old Mother Flannagan will be right there sawing away with me.

Yea, life happens...music is sometimes an escape, and sometimes it gets put aside for awhile...
I'm sorry to hear about your Dad!! :-(

Feel like we all just need to get together on a back porch and learn/play this together, LOL! Although I am still a really slow ear-learner.

oops...I just shouldn't have let loose and whined with letters instead of with a fiddle...lol...yeah sorry bout that. I can't seem to play any music except real whiney sounding stuff right now...maybe i'll make a whiny version of Old Mother Flannagan...try it that way and see how she goes! Sorry I blabbered out loud...not good.

Peggy, I saw your earlier post on the same subject, which I guess you deleted. Its obviously troubling you deeply.

I haven't felt much like playing anything for the last couple years, and I'm not the only one, so there's a general malaise in the air, but your situation is different. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Yes, NC...meet me on the ol' back porch...lol.

I sure appreciate your sentiments, Doug. I feel pretty stupid...I mean...what good are ya if your family turns out to hate ya a whole bunch....lol. Anyway, yeah, the pandemic sure doesn't make people feel too chipper, not to mention all the other depressing stuff going on. Whew...fiddling would help, but gettin' yourself to feel like fiddling seems harder all the time. I hope you feel like playing again soon too.

Well here's my attempt at playing a brand new Old Mother Flannagan, however ya spell it. The end is bizarre and weird...sorry, but I just absentmindedly did a weird thing with my scratch track, which I always carefully (except not too carefully this time...lol) put on first with a metronome so i can get a good guide to play the other instruments by and then delete the scratch track when all my other tracks are there...anyhow...for whatever reason, losing my mind or whatever, I went nuts at the end and played weird chords until I stopped myself but didn't think about that because that was yesterday and flatout didn't think about that...proceeded to put the banjo on first, with the scratch track, again absentmindledly just went koo koo at that weird part...then went on from there, for some reason thinking I could make that work with the other instruments, so it sounded so weird and I was out of time to spend on it...realizing my life would've been better if I'd just re-done the scratch track and banjo track before laying down the other tracks...so...I just added more weird stuff to try to make it sound like "I meant that..." when in fact, it sounds just ridiculous...but...well....here it is anyway...lol.

My submission for VFF for May...Old Mother .... Flanna- whoever...lol... youtu.be/BS94cnJVyKY

Well that sounds good Peggy as always, i don't hear any weird stuff ? I like the last couple of chords you played to end it... Is it a C chord, (the 4 chord)? then hit the 1 chord (G?) ...After a pause. Might use it myself instead of my usual 5-1 ending.
