In case folks missed from other topic thread.

The idea is just a Zoom meet up to visit and maybe swap tunes, stories or jokes... no specific agenda or rules. (note it is not a live jam)

Zoom has a 40 minute limit... so had to schedule two; first is at 4pm Central time, second at 5pm central (no option to do 4:45). Unless someone else has a Zoom account we can use (perhaps  thru work?)... for now I scheduled these.

To join in... just click the link below, and enter the passcode. You don't need a Zoom acct, and should be able to just use web browser.

Topic: FHO meetup

Time: Jan 29, 2022 04:00 PM Central Time (US and Canada)

Join Zoom Meeting

Meeting ID: 828 0139 2855
Passcode: wn8her

-----------

I think that will end so will need to join a second link

Topic: FHO session 2
Time: Jan 29, 2022 05:00 PM Central Time (US and Canada)

Join Zoom Meeting
https://us05web.zoom.us/j/87860953927?pwd=UHJ6TXk4VUV6STRad0tsMzhUeW8vUT09

Meeting ID: 878 6095 3927
Passcode: rw9tMs

Can extended by making another meeting... if folks want to.

-------

For folks unfamiliar with Zoom a few notes setup and etiquette. (perhaps others might add to this).

Know where the mic mute button is. Often a good idea to mute yourself if just listening.

Technically don't need any special equipment to join in... just built in from computer or laptop or phone should work initially. If you have better mic/setup by all means use that.

Your video cam might not be enabled when entering, so will have to enable it. Video is optional, if don't have camera, or don't want to be seen.

There is a text/chat function as well.

If possible, use headphones. While possible to use speakers... that sometimes causes echo or feedback issues.

If possible test out your audio setup first, that the mic levels are good, if using an external mic (for better quality), that your distance to mic is good.

One issue some folks will have is with a bit of poor sound, garbly, drop outs... which might make playing music a little tough... For better audio for music, you can go to zoom audio settings and choose use original sound... and some other tweaks. Note this might cause issues with feedback or echo if not using headphones.

edit to add: wireless wifi or bluetooth devices sometimes cause issues for good sound, dropouts... esp those head sets. Wires are usually better for sound.

Others might have some other suggestions?

Do we need a moderator or compere of some kind, or just let it be a wild rumpus?

Hope it's a good time...it would be cool if some could be recorded...but you know...life gets complicated and no use to add to that. Anyway...hope it's a fun thing. I can't make it...busy during those times and so much of the time...enjoy!

Thanks for setting this up Geo!

You mentioned the Original Sound option and I thought I'd provide a bit more detail for those interested.

In Zoom, turning on better audio (suppress noise cancellation) is a 2-step process. On a Mac laptop:

Step 1: Configure the 'Enable Original Sound' option in Preferences

Download or Open the Zoom app (it's free).
Go to Zoom Settings (AKA 'Preferences).
Locate the 'Audio' menu item, click to select, and scroll down to 'Music and Professional Audio'.
Check the box next to 'Show in-meeting option to enable Original Sound' (if it's not already checked).
To be extra fancy (if you have the bandwidth) you can select 'High-fidelity music mode'.
Unless you are on headphones, make sure 'Echo cancellation' is checked.
(I've not experimented with Stereo audio option, not sure that's available in all Zoom meeting types...so leave off.)

Step 2: Toggle the option 'on' when playing music:

Once in the zoom call, mouse to the upper left and click on the green icon showing 'Original Sound: Off'
Clicking this should result in it changing to 'Original Sound: On, which is what you want for music.

NOTES:

You can toggle this on/off for conversations vs playing music if you wish. But if you're wearing headphones the audio should be good quality for both.

On your end, you won't hear the difference (as you don't hear yourself at all, typically) but others should.

Note also that the process is different on a smartphone or tablet.

For iPhone, from the Zoom app:

Step 1: Configure the Original Audio option

Go to 'Settings' (Gear icon) and click the 'Meetings' option;
Scroll down to Audio and engage the 'Use Original Audio' slider so that it is on (green showing).

Step 2 Turn on original audio if playing music:

Once in the meeting, click the 'More...' option at lower right.
Scroll down to 'Enable Original Sound'.
If it is off (a line through the icon) touch to activate it.

Hope this helps. Anyone with Windows or Android might comment on any differences in the process.

I have a conflict today but I hope you do this again in the future because I would like to check this out.

I know a bit about audio lag from the type of work I do, so here is a suggestion for people who are logging in. You can significantly reduce audio lag and compression delay if you are equipped with this:

1. Use an ethernet cable to connect to the internet rather than wifi;
2. Use a digital USB microphone instead of the microphone on your laptop or tablet;
3. If you have one, use a digital USB camera instead of your laptop or tablet camera.

This is not necessary for a Zoom session if people are simply taking turns playing rather than trying play as an ensemble.

But using a digital microphone and camera can help to make it more likely that the audio stays in sync with the video for those who watch your performance.

The idea is that the processing of the audio and video into digital code is done through the USB device, so that takes the load off the laptop or tablet. As a result, you are more likely to have the audio stay in sync with the video when you transmit. Similarly, connecting via ethernet cuts down on delay by increasing your internet transmission speed.

For people who take all of the above steps and live in the same immediate geographical area (e.g. same city), this can cut down the delay enough to make it feasible to play together with several other musicians in real time on a platform like JamKazam. I have tried to get some musicians whom I know to try this in my city, but their eyes glaze over when I mention the tech specs. I don’t blame ‘em….

It's a social event, the point is to be there and interact with folks in present... like a party/potluck.

Folks are stop by at any time during, if just to say hello.

Hopefully won't need a mod.

Zoom has allowed us to have our first session without 40 minute limit... so we are there rather than the second meeting

I've always appreciated meeting people in person vs just talking to a Hangout persona... For example Alaskafiddler... ALWAYS left me just a little intimidated..because he has many challenging insites to various topics.. But, having met him now on zoom... I find that he is actually a very approachable guy !!! (that is a compliment, George).... Can't wait to do zoom again..

Good time had by all, fortunately no wild rumpus (or unfortunately?)

We'll do again.

Not sure how soon folks want to do another.

Zoom sent me a perk that I can do another unlimited session, but I think only tomorrow.

To briefly recap for other interested... we spent part of the time just socializing; part talking fiddle strings, a little technical question about bowing technique; and of course playing a few tunes for each other. One was different versions/takes on same tune. (others could play along on mute). Seemed to work fine.

I thought the sound quality was acceptable from everyone. I know that Billy used a seperate mic (SM58?) which sounded great, I was using an inexpensive USB condenser mic; not exactly sure what others were using, some just a built in mic on computer or laptop which sounded acceptable. Peghead used a headset... even that wasn't unlistenable.

I could host next week, maybe at 2pm central if that works. Otherwise, 4pm worked fine, just thought I'd we were somewhat earlier Anja could play with us. Chime in with suggestions.
