is that last post enough Lee? Let me know if you haven't zoomed. I don't do it much, infact this is the first one that i have started. Before i have always followed other peoples links. You need to download the Zoom app, which is free and small, and then click on the link in my message. I think you then type in the pass code on the bottom of my post.
My feeling is that it doesn't work to jam on zoom, but I could play a tune or a phrase of some tune I am working on as could you or anyone else. I would enjoy just chatting (semi-in-person) with whomever answers the call. Give it a try.

I joined a zoom "jam" last week on a whim, and the way they organized it was reasonably good. It was just round-robin, each person would "lead" a tune, and go around the group, with an option to pass, of course. The facilitator had come up with a suggested tunes list and designated a common key beforehand. It was a small group (10 or so) so that helped too. Obviously we couldn't hear anyone play but the leader, and ourselves, but at least we got to hear each person in turn, and try out some new tunes, and that gave us something to talk about. I found it much more satisfying than the single-leader model.

It was an idea from other thread as response to this;
how it seems to be that there are a handful of OT fiddlers who seem to run into frustrations with finding local jams in their areas. Well, here we are in this information age and we can make any far away place local...
...see what everybody's playin...play along, on your fiddle, your guitar, your banjo, your hurdy-gurdy, whistle, or just drink your favorite drink and eat a couple of chips and guacamole, tap your foot, talk about the tune, share a few links that you like...join in anyway you want. No rules...just fun...
...to provide a motive for some of us who have no place to play, for learning tunes, sharing tunes, exchanging ideas, etc., you know, as you might do if you went to a real live,
That post is the VFF idea. This is another way to achieve goals the above. Similar, but rather than making recording, editing and uploading them; this would be more in real time, streamed using a conferencing app. (very simple to use)
There was some misinterpretations or confusion... so just to be clear - it is NOT an attempt to do real-time jamming experience, where folks trying to simultaneous play and hear each other synchronized as one. Like a recording, only one person is source heard playing thru speaker; but possible to play along (on mute)... it doesn't affect the source.
Despite that limitation, it can achieve other things... aspects more similar to live jam, especially the social interaction that happens... you see who you are playing to, real time conversation, comments, questions; and just "visitin". It can take different formats, whether just informal tune swap, or more teaching tunes, or slow jam. (what ever participants want the direction to be)
It doesn't really take any different equipment or setup than what a recording does. Will phone, tablet, or laptop built in mic work? For both, depends, it can get good enough results for some. Test it see how it works. There are some simple setup tweaks; or inexpensive solutions that can make better results.
Video is optional... you can just do audio. As well, if can't or don't want to participate with mic... can just listen and text chat is available.
But not to get over our skis...but should mention one other issue... not everyone is comfortable playing solo, and mention of backing tracks. Might pose a little problem for some, but solutions exist that are not that difficult. One is that you can do a screen share with audio. For that matter, that includes if whole prerecorded like VFF, and share/stream that from your DAW or Youtube (here's a recording I made the other day, hit play).
Like many things, (including reg jams) this can seem more complex in imagining it or text explanation than just doing it. Show up and participate, find out it's not that complex.

I've been in similar, those are fine ideas of format.
I would suggest though that initially we not overly worry about format... keep it very informal... perhaps as much about socializing get together for FHO folks; meet and greet, say hello, get to know each other; as is about playing a few tunes? Then see where that goes, what direction folks want to take it.

I'm likely to join a zoom jam on the weekend. My weekdays are full of work and evenings with practice and band rehearsals.

Need to pick a day/time so folks can plan.
Okay. how does Saturday at 4pm central time work? Or suggest a more definitive time that will work.
We also need to decide app.
Zoom is perhaps easiest what most folks are familiar with. The downside is 40 minute time limit. Of course if needing longer, the work around is to setup consecutive sessions... requires re-logging in with new code. Annoying but not a huge problem.
Google Meetings is similar, but has an hour limit.
Facebook Rooms is similar but has no time limit. I've used it a little, however, the controls and settings seem limited? Might not be a problem.
To answer another question... AFAIK each of these can be set so participants can just use web browser (without downloading app); however might need to make sure you set the session to do that.
----------
Thought of a way to schedule might be easier.
Anyone that's interested at all... post your top three time windows; and preference for Zoom/Google/FB.
For me. Anytime Saturday 4- 9pm (central time). Sunday 5 - 10pm (central time). Tuesday 5pm - 11pm (central time). Zoom.
Someone should volunteer to bring the virtual snacks and refreshments

I can join anytime that a meet is planned. I like the idea of chatting and perhaps a tune or two. I was going to do another one last night but the furnace cut out at 20 below. Back on now. I will wait for someone to create a zoom time and I will be there. Looking forward to it. Thanks

I could theoretically be available anytime, but really the earlier the better, and Saturday seems friendliest. I have the Zoom app. I think a little advance notice is better than the flash mob approach. I can get my lighting and makeup pretty close, but my hair stylist isn't always available at the drop of a hat.
Okay, Saturday, Jan 29; 4pm central time.
Unless someone else has a Zoom account we can use (perhaps thru work?)... for now I scheduled these.
