Just a heads up. There's rumors going around that there's been talk about the old Virtual Fiddle Festival revival. I overheard this and gonna check into it more.

Ok I'll just tell what I know. I was on chat with another OT enthusiast, RichJ...he and I were discussing how it seems to be that there are a handful of OT fiddlers who seem to run into frustrations with finding local jams in their areas. Well, here we are in this information age and we can make any far away place local. So we talked about reviving the Virtual Fiddle Festival...where you can boot up that computer (is that an old-fashioned, out-dated expression from the past century???), see what everybody's playin...play along, on your fiddle, your guitar, your banjo, your hurdy-gurdy, whistle, or just drink your favorite drink and eat a couple of chips and guacamole, tap your foot, talk about the tune, share a few links that you like...join in anyway you want. No rules...just fun.

You just need to be able to provide an mp3 or put up a video...youtube is free and easy to join...or if you prefer to just watch and listen, ok, but don't be a stranger about it...don't be so shy. Jump in and say something. Bring your own drinks and snacks but share them, at least virtually.

Once again, after much thoughtful and desultory discussion, we have settled on pulling our tunes randomly from Oldtimejam.com ... the reasons are because most of the tunes are out there and pretty well known, most of them are not overly difficult, you can listen to their examples on fiddle and/or banjo, they provide free jam tracks-both slow and fast...and there's more than enough tunes to help us get started. They will be chosen at random each month so the tune pickers can't choose favorites. We will do a new tune each month, so it gives all of the busy fiddlers some time to get their tune ready or just get ready.

Stay tuned...February 1st we meet here, in the Sound Off Forum...everyone is invited! Be there or be square! Hope to see you there! I hope I didn't forget any details.

I'm in. Been participating on the Banjo Hangout for while now, only theirs is weekly for crying out loud. It is crazy how folks can whip up a tune setting and tab in that time.

Is this a "learning a new tune" situation like the old VFF, or a day where we all come together to virtually play along and post tunes? Like a jam.

Are we limited to Oldtimejam? Also, what about designating a key for those who post other tunes (so banjo folks can play along without retuning and it feels like a jam)?

Thanks for bringing up some good questions, from an experienced VFF-er from the past, Chickenman. I'll try to make sure my ideas are clear.

Well it's just a one tune per MONTH idea, like it was the other time...that way busy folks get a chance to make some time to participate instead of all of us rushing to get with it, week to week.

It might be a learn-a-tune situation, if you don't already know the tune randomly chosen for that month, or if you already know it...it's just a play along thing, except since it's a virtual festival/jam, you have the time extended from the usual immediate time in an "analog" jam to extended time of one month, being a virtual jam.

Rich and I discussed possible sources of old time tunes to choose from a few times...but we finally settled on Old Time Jam for the reasons I enumerated above...mainly sorta more popular tunes likely to be familiar or easy to find, mainly most of them at OTJ are not really tricky or difficult to play, and you get a free jam track right there at OTJ if you want it...etc. For now...in the event that we would all get into this and get bored with a limited variety of tunes, we'll move on to something more huge to choose from...we'll see.

As to key...yes, don't know if I mentioned it, but of course anyone who wants to participate can choose their own key, because this being virtual, we can't hear each other at the same time. So, if the random choosing is Soldier's Joy, and you want to jump out on a wild and creative limb...tune to Calico and try something insane with Soldier's Joy...lol...or play it in D...play it on your harpsichord or kazoo...or play it on your banjo and fiddle. Just get creative and have a good time.

I'm hoping for an atmosphere for just plain fun and maybe some learning along the way too. Just like we'd expect from a friendly gathering in person...let's see what happens.

So, to clarify one more thing, because I feel like I'm being as clear as mud...lol... We plan to begin Virtual Fiddle Fest jam on February 1st...go to the Sound Off Forum and the tune will be announced...from there...it's all up to you...what will you do with that tune????

...andnow...I must go get my brownies out of the oven before they burn, which would be a real shame...lol.

Sounds to me like a scheme to drink other people's beer. Although I would like to try some of Billy's exotic Yunnan tea - will there be time for a proper ceremony?

I rarely have a proper ceremony, but always use the yixing teapot because it makes for a good cuppa. Black or oolong?

Maybe we can get Billy to share...I have no idea what it is, but I gotta feeling it must be some mighty good stuff.

I think one more thing I forgot...the other time around Red Dessert Fiddle volunteered and gave a couple of lessons on the sound off forum for tunes chosen...some of her students were FHO people so it was really nice of her to do that. So...if anyone here would like to participate by giving a lesson on the "Chosen One," the tune that is for any particular month...it would be a very nice gesture if they felt like doing that ... just in case there's some eager teachers hangin round here.

Sounds like a good idea. Just for some clarification, though:
1. The BHO TOTW (Tune of the Week) posts are a chance for people to introduce and talk about the history, evolution, whatever, of a tune they know or are learning, and present a/an video/audio version (often with a tab/notation thrown in). I have picked up many tunes to add to my (soon to expand) repertoire, which seems to grow constantly (the list, not the repertoire) longer.

2. Without having checked on that jam site, I'm not sure how it works, but I'm out of practice with playing nice with others, and just seem to go along at my own speed, either slower, much slower, or too-damned-fast-to-keep-a-rhythm, so I doubt anything I posted would work.

3. I don't do much listening/watching on-line, since my time there is fairly limited.

4. All of my audio/visual making programs seem to have been up-graded so I need a whole new learning curve before I can make a presentable presentation.

5. GO TO IT! I'll get something figured out some day when I have more time.

EDIT: One more thing.  Be sure to post this idea on BHO, I imagine there are a bunch of claw/2 & 3 finger pickers who would be interested.  It would mean, probably, having to post on both HO's, but might be worth it.

I'm not sure I get what the project is.

Is it any different than the previous, a reboot of tune of week, or month is chosen and people post their prerecorded audio or video file for others to listen to?

There are a more virtual, live interactive versions that can set up. I been involved with some of those, they can be fun. I did mention setting up one on FHO, but didn't seem much interest.  There are various versions... depends on what participants want. To me there is something I find more appealing with live interaction. Though though a little more to set up and run, some are not overly complex. Just thought I'd mention option.

I’m interested… I feel like I’m missing something though. I understand that:

1) the tune will be announced on Feb 1. Will the date of the jam be announced at the same time?

2) oldtimejam has tunes, but if there’s only one tune introduced each month (if I'm understanding that correctly) couldn’t the tunes come from any source, so long as it’s a shareable format?

Thanks for working on this idea!

Or maybe I just need to ask what the Virtual Fiddle Festival is?I take it that this is something most people used to know about, but I’m afraid I’m out of the loop on this…

If you want to make this "festival" mean more than just being a glorified jam or tune of the week/month, make it once or twice a year around the same time.

Hey, thanks for the interest, comments and questions!

This is basically a game of pretend, for those of us who never seem to have any place to go and play, or even for those of us who do play somewhere all the time but just crave for more.

So in our Virtual Fiddle Festival, it's virtual, so it goes on all the time...each month there is a jam that stretches out for the whole month long. That way, if you're busy, don't have time to learn the tune, etc., you've got time to get something together.

We plan to start out by randomly picking out a tune from an agreed upon list of tunes...for now we'll choose from OTJ since they have more than enough to get it going; the tunes on there are pretty straightforward, most not terribly difficult, most common enough that either we've heard them or can easily hear them on media, etc.; they play the tunes for us to listen to both on fiddle and banjo at OTJ and even have jam tracks there for anybody to use if they want. Those are the reasons we settled on OTJ...if we run out of tunes there, we can find another source of tunes to choose from.

Real time live videos would be fun, but I think most of us wouldn't be able to do that...so...what we do, what worked before and hopefully will work again now...is to check out the Sound Off Forum around the 1st day of each month...there, you will find a video of a random act of tune choosing in which the tune we will play will be revealed. From that point, you can play it at home, or at your friends' house, try to record it either mp3 or youtube, vimeo or however you can share it...either use the OTJ track or have a friend play a jam track or use strum machine if you have it or use no jam track at all...just play the doggone thing with us...in our virtually stretched out month-long jam. If you feel like just watching...just watch, but please comment and join in the discussion...if you know cool stuff or think cool stuff about the tune, tell it! If you know of a cool youtube or mp3 to link that you wanna share, share it. Post it all in that same topic we start in the Sound Off Forum so we aren't scattered around and can find each other in that spot....under that tent, so to speak. If you wanna play it on some other instrument than fiddle...play it...join in ! That's what makes it fun. Gives us all some goals, something to work on, something to share...something to look forward to with our music. If you want to make a lesson on the tune to share...gold stars to you...we welcome that. Just share in the musical fun, anyway you can, every month of the year.

I hope I didn't leave anything out...lol. I know there are people here on FHO now who weren't here the other time we had this going on...but just jump in and let's have fun. The back porch is moving into the virtual festival...VFF is a-comin' to town!

Not sure why think most wouldn't be able to? It's basically requires the same as making a recording and then uploading it.

Perhaps a different experience and goal than what you want. My idea was live social interaction experience, more like going to a live get-together, tune swap; allows for live dialogue interaction between participants. Example would be along lines of conference app; Zoom, Google Meetings, or Facebook Messenger Rooms (or others might be better options).

Not trying to dissuade your idea of tune of month recordings. Just mentioning other possibilities to fit a need to fiddlers who want to connect; seem to run into frustrations with finding local jams in their areas.

Maybe some of would know how to do that...lol...I have enough trouble just doing what little I can do with techie stuff. It would be a great project if someone took it upon themselves to hold live jams. The only issue I would see with that would be figuring out a time that everybody could have free to join, but it sounds like a fun thing. Still...afraid I'd never know how to do that...it would be a big confusing mess if I tried...lol...I'll leave that one to somebody else.

More like a tune of the month than a jam, where you upload an mp3 or video to share.

Might be some misunderstandings.

Perhaps you're not familiar with or ever used Zoom or similar meeting apps? Has a low learning curve and equip requirements, could even use a phone. For most folks less complex than what takes to learn to do recording, video programs and posting to YouTube.  There are tweaks to make it better, of course can optionally use better mic, interface, camera; but not required.

The basic way  wouldn't be a "jam".  Think just more of a get-together, talking, and folks taking turns playing a tune.

Figuring out a time, is a bit like any get together, or jam. The more issue would be on deciding which app. Zoom is probably most familiar, but the free host version only allows 40 minutes. Which might be fine for a first test session (can also extend by making more sessions). Perhaps someone already has access to an host account? Otherwise $15/month, but just for a hosts acct, so not that expensive (and can assign multiple folks to act as host). Google, and FB are perhaps less familiar, but not any more complex, and have unlimited time.

If  folks are interested to give 40 min test, I can set that up and send the link... just say when would work.

.

(there are real time jam possibilities that work for some, a little more complex, and conditions, but no more than most recording)

Sorry I didn't see this post until too late, but this idea sounds interesting to me. I don't know if there might be a problem with moderation (or lack thereof) and whether it would work best with similar skill levels.
What Peggy is talking about seems like the TOTW approach, which has been tried here before, and has eventually petered out from lack of interest.

When I tried to zoom with other folks there was so much lag and latency and noise in general it was impossible to know what was going on...it had to be one person at a time to make any sense of the sound. I don't understand what would make it work better.
