I recently traded for a fiddle by a maker named J N LaCroix out of Le Havre Montana. It's surprisingly good for an American maker, showing a sure hand, really clean workmanship, and it has a great sound, especially for fiddling. Nice growly g, sweet across the A and E, well balanced, plenty of volume. I found a couple of letters from him to Violinist magazine in the 20s, but otherwise nothing. Anybody have any info on this guy? I don't have a copy of Wenberg yet, nothing in Fairfield.
