Funny.. Up ahead on the road I saw what I thought was a run of the mill road killed opossum. Much to my surprise I discovered it to be a groundhog. Like any red blooded, ex back to the lander would have done... I drove around the block and picked it up. It had been run over multiple times so I was sure it was Dead.. However, after having driven about one mile with the deceased groundhog on the passenger side floor of my car, I encountered an ambulance coming my way, lights flashing and siren sounding... Dang, should I have left the groundhog on the road? Has a call been made to the animal rescue people??
After arriving home, I quickly separated the skin from the rest of the carcass and it it now drying, ready to be made into...something
How is your Holiday season coming along?

I'm done with banjos..!! However I did notice that the raw skin near the head is well over 1/8 inch thick.. Impressive.. I see a new wallet in my future.

Originally posted by groundhogpeggyYes I am deeply disturbed by this...lol. Don't you have to rub the hide down with brains or something to tan it properly? You ain't gettin' a hold of my brain, but I mean, somebody else's brain.
Don't worry, I'll use egg yolk as a tanning agent..!!
Frankly, it had been run over so many times, YUK, that with the exceptions of the tail and feet.. all of the bones and offal were MUSH... It wasn't pretty, I telz ya. At one point I even asked myself if I was in my right mind for having tackled the project (no comments, please)............Nothing internally would have been salvageable HAD I had a desire to use it... However, the good condition of the hide is a testament to how tough a Groundhog is!!!!!

That piece of skin would be an excellent prey for a dog's flirt pole! My Dixie would go nuts, I know for sure.
What is a flirt pole???

That hide is TOUGH.. I 'm thinkin of making some socks that won't ever develop holes!!

A flirt pole for dogs is like a very large cat toy!
A pole with a long string, and something to chase/hunt attached to the end...
My dog loves it and once he "catches" his "prey" (long flat stuffed animal i.e. fox) he'll give it a good hard shake...

Keeping an inane topic going is my "gift" to humanity!!
OK. The archery bow was my FIRST attempt to build such an item.. and guess what.. I had it strung up, was testing the poundage of the pull .....and the bow broke in half.. So much for groundhog backing.. should I have tried skunk??? Anyway, I calmly cut the bow into little pieces and threw it into the garbage can.. I wasn't disappointed, angry, or sad... I KNOW that what looks like failure is just a learning experience.. I've had a LOT of wood break during my years of bending wood for banjos... No, I have no plans to start another bow soon, but I don't feel like I failed.. I tried something and that something didn't work. Had I tried again maybe I'd have a functional archery bow..... nothing more and nothing less.... Such is life..
