Old-Time Fiddlers,

I want to tell you about an 8-week online course I'm offering this fall through the Louisville Folk School. This Zoom fiddle class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6-7pm Eastern beginning Tuesday, October 19th. The final meeting will be Tuesday, December 7th.

I just finished a very fun session teaching Old-Time Fiddle Repertoire Advanced in person to a wonderful group of Folk School students in Louisville, KY. We focused exclusively on music from Kentucky:

  • Doc Roberts' "Deer Walk"
  • Isham Monday's "Fire on the Mountain"
  • Bruce Greene's arrangement of “Five Miles of Ellum Wood"
  • John Morgan Salyer's "Trouble on the Mind"
  • William Hamilton Stepp's "Ways of the World"
  • and Ed Haley's "Half Past Four"

Because of some annoying life events, I'm going to have to be away from Kentucky for the coming months, so I am offering a new session of that same repertoire class that will be entirely online, and therefore is open to anyone with a strong enough internet connection, the requisite tune acquisition skills, and a willingness to stare at a screen for one extra hour each week.

This new session of the class will continue our focus on Kentucky old-time fiddle repertoire, with no repeats from last session. Old-Time Fiddle Repertoire Advanced is appropriate for intermediate-advanced players who are comfortable learning tunes quickly. The listening skills of the student must be well developed, as we will be referencing old field recordings and commercial recordings to understand and evoke Kentucky’s mountain music masters. We'll cover at least one tune each week, with time at the beginning of each class to review the previous week's piece.

I will be recording each Zoom meeting and making that video available to students after each class. I pitch correct and provide at 3 different speeds the source recordings so that students can listen to and play along with our fiddling heroes throughout the session.

If you'd like to learn more or sign up, there's currently an $18 discount applied to the class. Registration is here. Drop a comment on this post with any questions or tune requests. It would be really fun to have students from a variety of locales join this virtual class!

All my best,

Matt Brown
